Today is a Special Day

Today is a Special Day

But it’s only special for me, and for nobody else. At least not for this reason, anyway.

The thing is, a few years ago, I thought I’d do a rough calculation to see how many days it was since I started seeing the girl who is now my wife[ref]Thanks to Adam Buxton, it’s impossible to say “my wife” without hearing it in a robotic voice.[/ref]. From then, I thought I’d figure out how which day would be the day when I’d been with her for longer than I hadn’t, if you see what I mean. On which day would the number of days from us being together to then outnumber the number of days from the day I was born until the day we got together. Does that make sense?

As you’ve probably guessed, that day is today. At some point today (I didn’t go as far as figuring out the exact times), that tipover point will occur. Of course, since she’s older than me, her tipover point hasn’t happened yet.

Over the last few years I did wonder if we’d ever reach today. In 2014 she was diagnosed with cancer, and as our lives fell apart one thing that came to mind was we wouldn’t reach this day. Thankfully, after almost a year of treatments and scares and difficulties, she recovered and recently we had the one year all clear. At some point I need, for my own sake, to write about the whole experience but every time I try I just can’t. It’s too hard.

But we have had some great times over our many, many years together, not least having our beautiful little girl who entertains and surprises me every day. My wife and I have shared so much, and every day she gives me more reasons to love her and more reasons to worry about her, I look forward to seeing her after work each day, and can’t – and don’t want to – imagine what it would have been like if we’ve never met. She is my everything, I love her so much, and I’ve now spent half my life with her. The best half of my life.

  1. Congratulations to both of you. That sounds really formal and perfunctory, but I mean it. That’s quite a story. (Not least because it’s totally out of the blue. I had no idea you were even married. :O Now, if you don’t mind, I’ve, er… got… something in my eye…)
