Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (DS)

Ahaha! It's clicked! I see the point of the game now: it isn't just about exploring places and smacking baddies and collecting stuff - you get a huge hulking great tank and have giant tank battles! Amazing scenes!

And I had my first tank battle today, as well as rescuing some more slimes for my town. Really getting into this now. Hurrah!

Here's something I wrote for ugvh:

I thought it was going to be an RPG. It isn't.

Then it seemed like it was going to be a bit like Zelda. It isn't.

*Then* it looked like it was becoming a bit like Pokémon. It didn't.

So, what is it?

There are two main parts to the game. There's the "action" bits, where you explore places, collect items, solve simple puzzles, kill baddies and rescue slimes. These bits are sort of Zelda-y, I suppose, but you only really have one attack move and no power-ups. You smack things and they bounce, and then you carry them on your head. You can carry up to three things (baddies, items, rescued slimes) and then chuck them as a weapon or throw them onto the Slimeria Railway carriages you find and it carts them back home.

The other part, is the tank battle bit. You have this HUGE tank with cannons on it. You have to keep firing stuff through the cannons, but here's the thing: you don't actually control the tank - you run (uh, slime) around the inside of the tank and collect ammo from several ammo dispensers, carry it to the cannons, and launch it out. The ammo, however, is stuff you've found on your travels. So, if you found some arrows, or bullets, or exploding rocks, you can assign them as ammo and use them from your tank. Ace!

The tank sections play out much like the "Mario's Cement Factory" Game and Watch game. No, really. You see, the enemy tank are firing stuff at you too, and so you have to fire stuff out to not only hit the tank, but also to hit the projectiles heading in your direction too. And then, when the HP of the other tank hits zero, you nip out your tank and into the other one, and smash up the engine. Hurrah!

Things are made even more exciting when you get to assigning yourself a crew. You select other slimes to help you man (uh, slime) your tank - some infiltrate the other tank, some heal your slimes, some load cannons for you, etc. It's ace.
