Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 (Demo) (360)

Had a single game of this tonight, with me playing France vs Turkey. I never have been a big sports game fan, although Sensible Soccer is amazing and PES4 on the Xbox and FIFA ’06 on the DS both got quite a bit of play. And this is pretty good too. I don’t really know the controls (only pass and shoot, and tackle), and I managed to get a red card within five seconds of kickoff, then proceeded to lose …

Mercury Meltdown Revolution (Wii)

It’s a bit tricky now, it seems. Having finished all of the 4th lab, I’m now onto the 5th (the Geo Lab, I think), and it’s a big step up. Amongst other things, so far I’ve had to navigate hundreds of angled conveyors, and split a blob into three and keep a track of all of the bits. However, I have unlocked all of the “party” games (I say “party” as, although that’s what the game calls them, they’re all …

Mercury Meltdown Revolution (Wii)

Just in time to fill the Resident Evil 4-shaped void in my Wii drive slot, Mercury Meltdown Revolution arrived this morning. If you want it yourself, it’s a bargainlicious £14.99 at Shopto.net at the moment. I was expecting more of the Super Monkey Ball/Kororinpa thing with this, but it doesn’t feel like them at all. In fact, it’s more puzzles and less steady-hand, and you even hold the remote 90 degrees left from those other two games. Many of the …

Pro Evolution Soccer 4

Having not enjoyed a single football game since Sensible World of Soccer, I was unsure as to what I would think of this. I mean, everyone says it’s the best football game ever (except chavs, who think FIFA is because it is made by EA), but it looked a bit more complicated than SWOS. Anyway, I did some free training to start to get a feel for the controls, and then went into a match between England (me) and Belgium …

Animal Well (PS5): COMPLETED!

What if Jet Set Willy was a Metroidvania and it was a still all pixels but all the pixels had thousands of colours and there was amazing light and shadow effects and you got special toys that gave you new skills and it was all creepy and weird and there were ghosts and rooms in total darkness and there were puzzles and switches and you could warp around the map by climbing into the mouths of animals? Animal Well. Well, …

Songbird Symphony (Switch): COMPLETED!

You know, I’ve often wondered what Guitar Hero would be like if it was a cute platformer full of birds. Well, actually I never have. But clearly, someone did because here it is. Songbird Symphony stars Birb, a little bird of unknown origin, who sets out to find his family and where he came from. This involves some Metroidvania-lite platforming but instead of unlocking new skills to reach new areas, you unlock new musical notes which you tweet at locked …

Stuff I’ve Been Playing Recently

Wow. Been a while since I did this. Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (Switch) I’d finished it with Gunvolt previously, but now I’ve completed it with Copen. Who, despite feeling like the game was much harder with him, actually turned out to be much easier as, if you pay attention, he’s pretty much invulnerable. He does have some tricky platforming bits Gunvolt doesn’t, though. After that, it turns out you have to beat the final boss again, as each character again. …

Tearaway (Vita): COMPLETED!

When Little Big Planet was announced, there was a lot of excitement over how innovative and clever and creative it was. And it was all those things, and it looked fantastic and everything. Then we all realised that it was just a platformer with horrible physics and a rubbish, game breaking and unnecessary third dimension. The fact that virtually all of the user made levels don’t bother with any level depth speaks volumes. Despite the lovely narration by Stephen Fry, …

Yakuza 3 (PS3): COMPLETED!

With just over 30 hours on the clock, and still lots of side missions, exploring, and so on to do, I completed Yakuza 3. It was really quite easy, but most excellent. I seem to have accumulated a massive pile of, well, stuff. Comfy soles. Platinum Nails. Assorted drinks, tools, bits of junk, and cuddly toys. Also some rare gems and what could be bits of weapons. Have I used any of them? No. In fact, apart from mission-based items and worms …
