The Art of Toilets in Video Games

You may, or may not, be aware that I run a Tumblr image dump which collects together the many toilets I have found in video games. You can find it here, and it is a work of beauty. There’s something grounding about seeing a toilet in a game, and no other item can add realism like a toilet does.

From the pretty normal toilets in the likes of Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture:

and Gone Home:

to the futuristic from The Stanley Parable (no, not Portal 2!):

Some games are literally filled with toilets. Duke Nukem 3D and Fallout 4 for example – toilets everywhere!

Other games have less obvious toilets, like in Lego Jurassic World (actually, Lego games in general have a lot of toilets):

Outhouses seem to be a thing, apparently. Here’s Tearaway and Beware Planet Earth!:

And what about this for a hidden-in-plain-sight toilet from 3D Fantasy Zone?

Sadly, some toilets are inaccessible. From Persona 4 Golden:

And some are… well. Like this from Bernband:

Recently, I was playing Street Fighter Alpha 2 (you may have seen my blog post which, having written it, caused me to give the game another go) and it contains one of the very best examples of toilets in video games. Just watch this video:

Isn’t it incredible? Not only is the entire stage set in some public toilets, but you may have missed some of the detail:

The best, however, is this:

That’s right. It’s your actual Sherlock Holmes having a poo. If that isn’t art, I don’t know what is.
