Sonic Rush Adventure (DS)

Let me just start with one statement: This is not as good as any of the Megadrive Sonic games, nor is it even on par with Sonic Rush.

However, it isn’t bad. Strangely, it is both alarmingly fast (during actual levels) and painfully slow (the “adventure” chatty story bits) with some mid-speed boating inbetween. Yes, boating.

So far, I’ve played the first two “zones”, beaten two bosses (a dinosaur, and a big robot with swing-ball set), and I have all the “Material” (about which Sonic says “I’ve never heard of this ‘Material‘, which just sounds stupid…) needed for my next boat, and Tails says to ask him to make it, but there’s no option to do so. So I’m stuck. Pff.

Today started with having to find some herbs for the High Elves, and then progressed onto killing Lord Bane’s three (rather easy) Generals, followed by a Deathknight and then an Iron Golem (both quite easy too) before finally “fighting” Lord Bane himself.

With an alarming about of HP (three times what I had), it was somewhat nailbiting at the end as we were both on around 30HP, there were red skulls galore on the grid, and it was my turn. I knew whatever move I took would lead him open to skull match next turn, and I knew my Stun spell was being reflected more often than not so I wasn’t sure it would make him miss a turn. I gambled on it working, and it did! Lord Bane killed, win!

A roundup of the week

I’ve been away all week, so not been playing a huge amount in the way of games. However, my holiday was partly affected by rain, so my DS did get an airing. On that, I started playing Puzzle Quest, which is a Bejewelled/Zoo Keeper clone in an RPG setting. So you have to battle orcs and things by matching gems, and have special powers and stats and stuff. It sounds totally ridiculous, but is actually somewhat amazing.

I also played Silver Strike Bowling a fair bit. It’s an arcade machine that was in the pub where we stayed. I managed to get about 120 as my highest score – some 85 lower than the highest scorers on the leaderboard. Who, naturally, were the pub staff.

Today, upon returning, I had a bit of a catchup on XBLA. There were two new XBLA games this week – Super Contra and Wing Commander Arena. Sadly, they’re both crap.

My wife has been playing this a lot recently, and it shows. We played two player, and she beat me at everything – backgammon, billiards… everything.

Bah. That’s all wrong.

Flew through a load more levels today, without struggling on that many. I even unlocked the second bonus track, and then went back to Normal Mode to finish the two unlocked bonuses. I then had a stint on Easy to bump up my overall score a little, but actually found it quite difficult as it’s so slow!

Returned to Hard, and now I’m stuck on the Women Who Save Jin level, which I think is the last one before the end.

Having completed Normal Mode the other day, I made a start on Hard Mode today. And bloody hell, is it hard. I’m sure the jump from Normal to Hard is bigger than that on the first game.

Anyway, I’ve managed a few tracks, and unlocked the first bonus track – Monkey Magic! Managed to complete that too, although it took many attempts.

Yeah, already. But it’s impossible to put down, isn’t it? Besides, I’ve only done it on Medium and the real game isn’t until Hard.

But I loved it. Every single track is fantastic, the final “level” is suitably epic, and it’s basically Ouendan++. Which isn’t a bad thing.

Oooouueeenndaaaaaaaaaaan!

Hurrahs all round! Ouendan 2 is here! It arrived today and I’ve spent a good hour or so on it. And… it’s the best game ever made. Ever. Since the last one, anyway.

I was pessimistic about the tracklist, but I needn’t have worried – every single one (so far) has been excellent. In particular, “Go My Way” by Yaida Hitomi (she of “Over the Distance” from the first game), and the “I wanna be a popstar” song. Total aces.

I’m playing on Normal difficulty, and was completing tracks with ease, until I reached the one with the boy who wets himself. I failed before I was even halfway through. Bah!

Wario: Master of Disguise (DS)

Yes. The reviews are a little off-putting, but I’d tried the Japanese version a while ago and enjoyed it, so I bought the US version a while back and it arrived today.

It’s better than I remember, mainly because I actually some idea of what is going on. Wario enters TV programme, steals magic wand owned by master thief, become a thief himself, and can transform using different disguises that give him different powers.

So far, I have the thief disguise, the laser astronaut one, the artist one, and the genius one. Puzzles so far haven’t been that difficult, although the having to swap clothes (done through drawing shapes on the screen) several times in quick succession is a bit of a pain. I’ve completed the first two episodes, both on the ship, and killed both bosses.

Pretty good so far!

Played this two-player with my wife for a bit, until my DS battery started to run out. First up was 301 darts, which ended in quittage as neither of us could hit the required finisher.

Then, dominoes in “5 Up” mode. I won, but although I was miles ahead when I reached 35-ish points, somehow by 50 there was nothing much in it.

Hmm. I’m not really sure if I’m enjoying this or not. The premise is great – draw shapes to cast spells – but the fights are too difficult as a result. You’re under two much pressure to draw quickly and accurately, and your mana bar (which you use for spells) drains much too fast. Even the faux-RTS element with controllable monsters that you’ve captured is clumsy and hit-and-miss. There’s just too much to keep an eye on at once.

Anyway. I’ve run away from the Diva of Twilight, had a few fights, killed an evil mage, and now I’ve found the Sage of Water. Only he’s gone bad. So I have to kill him. But it’s too hard.

Decided to play a duel online then, having given up on the Sage of Water, and got my bottom handed to me in under 10 seconds by someone on a much much higher level than me, who was accompanied by what appeared to be a pack of golden wolves. Oh.

Either this game is stupidly hard, or I’m missing something obvious. It took loads of attempts to complete the rescue-the-girl mission, but then the run-away mission defeated me several times too (not least because you’re not given any clue as to where you’re supposed to run to. Silly.

Anyway. I’ve now just found my “grandma” missing and loads more monsters to kill.

I’ve had this game for aaaaages now. I bought it when it first came out in the US, and was really excited about the possibility of a decent DS RPG with art in the style of Studio Ghibli. It arrived, got put on my shelf, and then… nothing.

But I’ve completed all my recent DS games (except Final Fantasy III, but I’ve got the first two to make a start on before that), so I’ve dipped into my pile of older games.

So far: I’ve fought some stuff, learnt how to capture baddies, met Leonard, fought more stuff, and found a girl who fell from the sky. I now have to protect her, but can’t as it’s two hard and I die. Tch.

I know I haven’t played this in almost two months, but other things arrived and got in the way. Anyway. Today I played it for about two or three hours, which was long enough to finish the next few islands and complete the game!

Harbira Island was fantastic. A giant shop full of nerdy pop-band fanboys, complete with geek dialogue and two arcade games which you play as yourself. As in, a racing game where you run round the track. And fight the cars.

Overall, a really good, original, funny and bizarre RPG.

With the game complete, I set about clearing Tank Masters mode. There are C, B, A and S ranks, and I was up to the second (of three) fights in A rank.

None of those fights remaining were difficult, and my tactics were either bombard-with-stuff or infiltrate-and-destroy depending on the tactics of my opponent. Even the final fight at S rank, where the other tank had 1,500HP (compared to my 950) wasn’t difficult.

However, things were made a bit harder when a “final” final fight was sprung on me – me vs Hooly, with no crew for support. And Hooly’s tank had 3,000HP. Erk. And Hooly had loads of really powerful ammo. Net result? My HP was depleted completely within seconds, and Hooly still had 2956 left.

But I won! Every time Hooly came over to try to smash my engine, I killed him, buying me time to load some ammo into my cannons. Since he was only interested in my engine, he didn’t attempt to stop them from hitting his tank, so I slowly drained his HP and then nipped over to his tank (killing him en-route) to smash up his engine. Winnar!
