Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground (360): COMPLETED!

So it would seem that in order to complete the game, you just have to do X many goals, and then impress Y many pros, then do the final video with the pros in.

So I did! Hurrah!

I still have most of the Rigger stuff to go, and loads more street challenges, but the actual Story is now complete, and I got the credits and stuff. So an excellent game by all accounts. I’d sit it a little behind THP8, but ahead of THUG, THUG2 and THAW. I really should place the whole series in order of aceness at some point.

With more stats built up (everything bar wallride and spin), I had another go at Mike V’s huge gap thing – and managed it first time. Ditto for the few gaps he asked me to nail afterwards too. That opened up a load more of stuff in the Hardcore story.

Completed all of Dustin’s “missions”, most of which involved “skate checking” – punching people as I skated round. I then did a few Classic goals, and went off to build the rest of my stats up, maxing them out.

I’ve given up on trying to clear the gap that Mike V wants me to do (for now), and have instead moved back to the Pro storyline until my stats have increased a bit. I’ve bumped into another Pro skater and his photographer, and we took loads of photos of me doing stuff.

He taught me how to “nail the manual” too, which is really quite hard. I then went off for a bit and completed some spot street challenges and built up my stats some more.

Didn’t play for all that long today, but I did finish off Arto’s chapter with the last of his video clips and the final of the Tri-City comp. That netted me a few more achievements.

I then went back to Mike V’s chapter (he does the hardcore stuff, dontchaknow), and completed a few things. I’m totally stuck now though, as I have to jump a huuuuuuge gap, and there’s no way in hell I can make it.

Eric is in it. Yeah, he looks and sounds different, but he’s still Eric. Eric, your rival in THUG and THUG2. And your rival here too. Pah. How annoying.

But I beat him in a competition (after beating him in a previous one, which he’d rigged so he won anyway), so that was OK.

Took part in lots of video shoots for Arto too, and learned how to Nail the Grab from Bob Burnquist. Explored the city a bit, and managed to Am (and in a few cases, Pro) some spot challenges. I’m having problems though, particularly with manuals and grinds, seeing what route I’m supposed to be taking.

And I built up my stats a bit. Turns out the reason I couldn’t revert is because they’ve changed the control to do it! For ever it has been the grind button at the top of a half-pipe. Now, for some reason, it’s RB and grind at the same time. WHY.

Played for a little bit more this evening. I’m mainly concentrating on the “Pro” story at the moment (although I’m not very far in). I did get an achievement for completing a chapter, though.

It seems you do build up your stats in the same way as Project 8, so I might do that next time I play. It does seem very hard otherwise, and I can’t seem to do reverts at all, which leads me to believe I have to speak to someone and learn how first.

With Eternal Sonata now complete, I started something else. I love Tony Hawk games. If you’re a long-time reader of this gaming diary, you’d know this. I went through pretty much every single available TH game, even the crap Game Boy Colour ones, a couple of years ago. It was amazing.

Anyway. This version seems to have taken a step away from the fantastic (and complete return to form) Tony Hawk’s Project 8, instead looking a bit more like Tony Hawk’s Underground, where the series went a bit wrong. Hopefully, it’s only superficial, and already I’ve found the trick markers and stuff from THP8, so all isn’t lost!

So far, I’ve done the first four “things”. A chapter in each of the four “modes” – rigger, pro, hardcore and street. The stats system has changed (again), so unlike recent games, I can’t just built those up before I start properly – so shock! I had play properly!

But it all seems good so far. It’s a bit grey, but that’s probably just the area you start in.

Oh my! First skate. and now this! Amazing!

Firstly, let me just say one thing: TONY HAWK AND SKATE ARE NOT THE SAME TYPE OF GAME. It really annoys me when people say that TH games are redundant now that skate. is here, and it does everything TH games should have done long ago. This is not true. Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground is, like all TH games, an arcade game. skate. is a simulation.

Like how Gran Turismo isn’t Outrun 2. Or how Cannon Fodder isn’t Ghost Recon.

I loved the skate. demo. But I also love the THPG demo. There is room for both. I will buy both, in the same way I have bought both Bioshock and Mercury Meltdown Revolution. Anyway. Rant over.

I like the three playing styles (hardcore, career and rigger), and thing the new Nail-The-Trick extensions are great too. The only slight niggle in my head is that it seems to be moving back towards Tony Hawk’s Underground territory, and I’m not sure that was a great alley to be walking down. You even have a rival called Eric – just like THUG and THUG2. Hmm.

I think I’ve pretty much exhausted this now. I’ve cleaned up on missions and ranch pieces, done all the BMX “missions”, found all the pros and impressed them, and completed a pile of tramp money challenges and graffiti challenges only to find they never actually end. I’ve done all the Sponsor Challenges too, but it still shows only 40/70 done, even though all my stats are full and no shop has any challenges left to offer. Bizarre.

Then, I went through an 100%ed Classic Mode, and then went and did high score runs on Free Skate, getting scores of at least a million in each area.

Finally, I played a load of games online (and was surprised to find so many people playing, considering the game is now almost 18 months old and has been superseded by Project 8), and won at least one match on each map.

Overall then, I think I’ve pretty much milked the game now. It’s a shame that for some reason it hasn’t given me the 100 gamepoints for 100%ing the game, but I’m suspicious that it’s actually a bug or something as there’s nothing left to do!

Into the Casino I went, and collected loads of skate pieces and chips, before making the mad dash back to the ranch avoiding the police. Which was really easy. I’m convinced it was bloody hard last time, but obviously not.

Either that or I have Mad Sk8 Skillz now.

And that was it. Green Pipes Point was mine (or rather, Iggy’s), and the credits rolled. Hurrahs!

Well, the BMX bit was easy. Like, really easy. In fact, I did it by accident. My memory clear isn’t right.

Anyway, with that out of the way, and Boone rescued from the drainage pipe he was stuck in, it was off round all the locations to convince all the pro skaters to be in my video. A couple of them were a pain (like the Collect the Shoes one), but nothing too difficult.

Off to the Casino next!

Finished off the Oil Rig by collecting some more bits for the skate park, and then skated back to the park myself to fix the crane with my spray can.

No, really.

After that, it was back off to Downtown to try and join the Black Widowz, which involved getting myself a tattoo, then spending aaaaaages trying the “manual through the million flags” challenge (which was really hard as I couldn’t keep up my momentum, until I realised I could liptrick the wall behind where you start to give a speed boost), then had to run round all of LA “bombing” things (that’s graffiti, not explosives) and now I have to get trained on a BMX. Which I’m not looking forward to…

I’m also stuck trying one of the daily stats-boosting challenges. It says “do four fliptricks in one combo”, so I do, and nothing happens. Then I thought, “ah, maybe not kickflips – perhaps it’s backflips and stuff?”, and so did that instead. And that didn’t work either. In fact, a single combo with ten kickflips and seven front flips didn’t work. Rubbish.

Still working through Story Mode on this. It seems a lot easier than I recall, but then, I haven’t reached the bloody hard biking bit yet. I’m dreading that, as I’m sure I almost exploded with actual rage last time.

So today, I walked the Vans competition, got Iggy locked up, joined Skate Club (the first rule about Skate Club, is you don’t talk about Skate Club), impressed Tony Alva, wrecked the Big Wheel, and reached the Oil Rig via Mega’s boat. I’ve even fed his shark. Ace!

Seeing as I’ve run out of Tony Hawk games, and the 360 version of this arrived last week having been bought for peanuts, so I’ve decided to play it. Yes, I’ve got (and completed) the Xbox version already, but that was over a year ago and I can’t wait until Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground which is supposedly out later this year.

Anyway. So I’ve reached Vans, which (IIRC) is about a third of the way through the game. I’ve yet to learn how to pivot though, which I’m sure I should be able to do by now.

Spent about an hour playing online, and managed to get the Complete 50 Games Online achievement. Had some decent games, with no restarts like yesterday. I just wish people would think a little more about what they’re setting up – Walls mode with the full map and only three players simply doesn’t work. You have very little chance of even seeing any walls by the other players, let alone being forced into colliding with one.
