The PS3, Two Months On
You may recall that just over two months ago, my brain became sick and I bought a Playstation 3. A 160GB Playstation 3 Slim, to be more specific. Even though I’ve hated everything Sony have ever made, and after the mistake I made getting a PSP, I promised myself I’d never buy a PS3. So I bought a PS3. Buh. Now I’ve had it a bit longer, and PSN is back up properly (sort of), and I’ve downloaded some games …
Let’s Play! Castle Master
Over on That Newsgroup Wot I’m In, we were talking about whatever the first proper FPS game was. Back before Wolfenstein, before Doom, before Faceball 3000. I think we pretty much established that if you widen your definition of “First Person Shooter” enough, then Atari’s Battlezone was one of the very first. Apparently there were older, but none that many people really remember. Anyway, part of the discussion threw up the old Incentive Software “Freescape” games. Although technically adventure, puzzle, …
Top 10 Obscure Games
I’ve often said that I love buying games that are bizarre and obscure. Usually, they’re crap – which often explains why they’re pretty obscure. Sometimes, though, they’re great. By obscure I mean they’re pretty much unheard of to the general gaming public. This is either because they’re for a machine never released in whatever region of the world they’re in, or the game bombed so nobody bought it (these games aren’t always bad, surprisingly), or even just that nobody forgot …
Top 10 Mega Drive Games
Of every games console or computer I’ve ever owned, the Sega Mega Drive is probably my favourite. It was my first console, and the one I own most games for. It also saw me through most of university, despite the N64, Saturn and PS1 all having just come out – I obviously didn’t have any money to buy them. It wasn’t until the end of 1999 that I bought something newer, meaning I’d had a full 8 years of Megadriving. …
The Very Quick Megadrive Ultimate Collection Review Selection
A list of all the games (from Wikipedia, sorry) and some indepth reviews of each title: Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle – great! Alien Storm – rubbish! Alien Syndrome (arcade) – OK! Altered Beast – rubbish! Bonanza Bros. – OK! Columns – Not as good as the Master System version! Comix Zone – great but hard! Decap Attack – amazing! Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine – great! Dynamite Headdy – not as good as it used to be! ESWAT: …
Lego Indiana Jones (360)
Oh my! Who’d have thought that I’d get some game-time this weekend? Not only did I manage to start this, but I also managed a few minutes on a few demos – Legendary (crap) and Skate 2 (acebest!). I made a start on Lindy yesterday, completing the first two levels of Raiders of the Lost Ark. I was surprised at just how good it was, as I seem to recall the lack of guns (compared to Lego Star Wars) was …
Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (PSP)
Well, it seems to have got much easier now. I had a fight against the Cardinal (or rather, a demon-fused version of the Cardinal) which was alarmingly easy. He cast Doom on three of my characters, but since I killed him in just two hits (my White Mage’s “Holy” spell did over 300 damage!) that wasn’t a problem. He was a sort of end-of-chapter boss, as I’m now onto Chapter 3, and am about 20 hours into the game. Of …
Marathon: Durandal (Demo) (360)
It isn’t all that long ago I played the original Marathon on my MacBook via AlephOne. I wasn’t all that impressed then, and I’m not very impressed with it’s sequel (why do the sequel first?) on XBLA either. There’s nothing actually wrong with it at all. It’s just that Marathon is, and always has been, a poor man’s Doom. I got hold of an old Mac about 7 years ago with Marathon on it, and I didn’t like it then, …
Sonic the Hedgehog (360): COMPLETED!
And not just completed – completed without losing a life! I didn’t really even have to try that hard, actually, although I did nearly plunge to my doom on Scrap Brain Zone 1. Which would have been a bit of a pain. And I almost drowned twice on Scrap Brain Zone 3. But I did it, which is all that’s important! Then I went and started again, to try for the Win In 40 Minutes achievement and the Fast Marble …
Kameo: Elements of Power (360)
I can’t believe how mediocre this game is. Yeah, Rare have pulled some real stinkers out of the hat before (Grabbed by the Ghoulies anyone?) but this was so hyped, and so long in the making (it was originally a N64 title!) that it’s amazing that it was released in this, clearly unfinished, state. Earlier today, I posted this at rllmuk: I’m five hours in, and have just done the catapult bit. Having no proper way of rolling the ammo …
The Castlevania Adventure (GB)
What? In? Hell? This has to be the slowest, hardest, most irritating game ever made. Ever. Your character (Simon? It doesn’t tell you) moves as a snails pace. You have no subweapons. You can’t jump very far (and the game is full of pixel-perfect jumps), you only have three lives, often when you die you go back miles, and the whole game jerks and judders all over the place. Ace! So I spent AGES trying to get past the Stepping …
Tony Hawk’s Project 8 (360)
Doomed. I’m doomed. Completely. If having Viva Pinata wasn’t addiction enough, having not one but two new Tony Hawk games (and a third is out on the Wii in less than three weeks) is just going to cause me to apply for treatment in a clinic somewhere. So I put this on. Two hours later, I was still completely ignoring most of the goals and missions, and was instead just messing around, and doing that Tony Hawk favourite: “Take Your …
Some Xbox 360 Demo Games (360)
So I downloaded a few more game demos today. First off, was Full Auto, which is very much like Burnout only with guns. And a Prince of Persia-style time-rewind system. It plays nice and all, but it doesn’t look much better than Burnout 3. In fact, in some ways, it’s actually worse visually. Probably not a game I’ll be buying any time soon, sorry Sega… Then I played Quake 4. I don’t mind FPS games, but they’re not my favourite …
Super Monkey Ball: Touch & Roll (DS)
New game day! Well, almost every day is New Game Day at the moment, but anyway. Played through the first world, completing it without much difficulty (and with ten lives spare afterwards), and then moved onto the desert world. Got to level 9 I think, and lost my last life there. I played all of the party games then, including a full round of Monkey Mini Golf on which I scored 55. It would have been much lower, but Hole …
