That Thing You (Haven’t Yet) Do(ne)

(this question from @thermalsatsuma)

ok, here’s a topic for you – is there anything you’ve always wanted to do but never got around to? Will you do it this year?

You know what, there’s not actually that much I want to do. Maybe I’m a bit boring, unambitious or unadventurous, or maybe I’m just happy where I am. I’ve travelled a little but there are few places I really want to see (exception below), and I’ve already got a lovely wife and child so that’s another couple of achievements unlocked.

However, there are a few things I’d like to do or achieve at some point. I very much doubt they’ll be this year.

Go to Japan

I realise this is probably easy to do in the scheme of things. I could just go. But there’s arranging work and money and family, and I’d like my daughter to appreciate it as much as me and she’s probably a bit young for that at the moment. Oh, and I’m not sure about the long plane journey, being an uneasy flier who was involved in a near plane crash[ref]Well, it seemed to me at the time we were all going to die horribly, but it was all fine and just turbulence.[/ref] a few years ago.

I’ve wanted to go for many years, both to see all the usual geek stuff of Akihabara and rummaging through old Famicom games in Super Potato and pretending I’m in Yakuza 4, and also to see “traditional” Japan, the villages and temples and stuff. I love the whole lot. I can speak a little Japanese, and learning that was partly to assist with eventually going there.

Write a Book

Christopher Hitchens once said “Everyone has a book inside them”, and I think I do. It may be terrible, and although I’ve attempted Nanowrimo before now I never got very far. I’ve a plot and some characters and there’s a lot of work to be done, but even it I just it spat out and into an eBook I think that would count.

Christopher Hitchens finished his sentence with “which is exactly where it should, I think, in most cases, remain”, so there’s that to bear in mind.

It’s a present day sci-fi apocalypse comedy, in case you’re wondering.

Complete a Game Collection

As you can see, I don’t really have a world-shattering set of “wannados”. No “learn nuclear physics”[ref]Technically, I’ve already partly done that. It was hard.[/ref] or “end world hunger” or anything, so this sounds utterly pointless. However, at some point, I’d like to have a complete collection of all the games for a specific console. Which console, I’m not sure, although I think I may be closest with either the Megadrive or the Gamecube. Why do I want this? I’ve no idea. It might be cool.

Other than those… I’m good, I think. Perhaps I’d like a magazine or “big” video gaming website to publish one of my reviews? That’d be nice, and I’m sort of slowing working to that by writing a lot of stuff.

Oh yeah, and obtain superpowers. Everyone wants superpowers, right?
