2007: A Year in Gaming – Part 1

So, the end of the year is nigh, and I thought I’d round up this year’s games. That is, the games I’ve played this year, rather than just those that have come out this year, although in most cases it’s the same thing.

January

The year started as 2006 ended – with Castlevania. Specifically, Circle of the Moon and Harmony of Dissonance on the GBA, supplemented by Super Castlevania IV for the Wii’s Virtual Console. There was also a lot of Viva Pinata play this month, and incidental smatterings of Super Mario Bros (Wii VC), Lumines Live! and New Rally-X (both XBLA).

February

Castlevaniamania continued through February with the rest of Dissonance, all of Aria of Sorrow, both Game Boy Castlevania games, all of the DS title Portrait of Ruin and some of the travesty that is the PS2 “Castlevania” (note the quotes – it’s no more Castlevania than Rise of the Robots is). Phew! Kororinpa and Excite Truck were much loved on the Wii, as were a few other VC titles (Super Mario World, Kirby’s Adventure, Mario Kart 64 and Military Madness in particular) and Contact on the DS got a lot of my time.

March

Although there was some more play on some of February’s games (Excite Truck especially), March was a very DS-focussed month. More Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, as well as all of Rocket Slime, Touch Detective, Hotel Dusk, Gunpey and Kirby Squeak Squad. Castlevaniamania was alive and well with extensive gaming on both Portrait of Ruin, and also Symphony of the Night when it hit XBLA. Of course, March will mostly be remembered for the amazing game that is Lady Cruncher on the PC, which I bought for a quid from Asda. Fabulous.

April

If March was DS Month, then April was quite clearly 360 Month. Two games in particular filled my time in those weeks – Eets: Chowdown on XBLA, and the Oblivion expansion pack – The Shivering Isles. Oh, and Guitar Hero II! Most of the rest of the month was filled with trying to get into Lostmagic on the DS (and finding it’s crap, so don’t bother), lots of XBLA demos, and finishing up some bits on March’s titles.
