Spectrum Adventures in Wii Homebrew

Spectrum Adventures in Wii Homebrew

It would seem that the Wii Homebrew “scene” has now matured to the point where not only are fully working games, apps and emulators now available, but there’s a modchip-free way of installing them. You stick a hacked Zelda save game on your Wii, load the game, and it crashes allowing some code to run. This installs the amazing “Homebrew Channel” on your Wii.

There are loads of things you can do with it, but, as is my “thing”, the most obvious was to get a Spectrum emulator up and running. FUSE, the emulator I tend to use on my Mac, has a Wii port. So I installed it…

After playing a bit of Chuckie Egg, it was time to break out the Best Game Ever Made… Run Baby Run. Here’s a video of it loading:

  1. Hey DeKay. Can you use any emulators for this homebrew channel? Is there a site where I can get them from and where did you get DuckHunt from.
    Sorry, so many questions!

  2. So I played the loading wotsit. (can’t resist hearing a speccy load).
    No sound…
    Turn sound up…
    No sound…
    Bah.
    Turn sound RIGHT UP.
strange crackling…conclusion…this is Wii / Spectrum loading noises.
    Not impressed.
    NEEEEEEEEEEWAH
    NEEEEEEEEEEWAH
    NEEEEEEEEEEWAH

Turns out the crackling was the video-person moving about. The NEEEEWAH noises were the Stop The Tape stylee awful siren type noises that games often made when loaded.

Despite the sheer badness of it, I felt a certain nostalgic enlightenment, thanks for post, I’m off to relive ZX.
And then I may go buy a Wii.
Or steal one from a child.

    Thanks 🙂

  3. Hi Sean,
Most of my channels are NES, Megadrive, PC Engine and SNES games, which take up very little space at all. N64 games, NeoGeo games, and Wii Ware titles are huge in comparison, and if you’ve got things like the Wii Fit and Mario Kart channels active too, you’ll fill up your Wii in no time.

However, since taking the picture I’ve had to delete loads of channels in order to make space for Pop!, Toki Tori, and saved games 🙁

    deKay
