My Wii RIP, part I

My Wii RIP, part I

So I bricked my Wii last night. To cut a long story short, I’d attempted to download the updated shop channel using WiiSCU to bypass the homebrew-stomping Nintendo System Menu 4.2 update, and now it’s bricked. Bah.

When my 360 dies, or plays up, or just doesn’t work, I get annoyed. With my Wii, it’s different. It made me sad. Not least because I’m concerned about the 4 months I’ve put into Animal Crossing – a save file it won’t let you back up onto SD.

I’ve attempted a few things to unbrick it, and there are a few more to try (a modded GC controller with a game containing SM 4.1 looks like a goer), but I’ve decided to test the water with Nintendo to see if I could get it fixed with them. Yes, I’ll have to pay through the arse and they’ll laugh and point, but I want my Wii back!

I’ve emailed this:

Hi there,

Firstly, I have a confession. I have installed homebrew (which I must stress, has NEVER been used for piracy) on my Wii, and in the process of updating it yesterday, to try and access the shop channel, my Wii is now bricked. You may laugh and point at me now.

When I press the power button, it lights up green, the disc slot flashes, and if there’s a disc in, it whirrs. I don’t, however, get any sort of picture on the screen. My TV displays “no signal”, and I get no sound either. I’m using an (official) component cable. My Wii remote will allow me to turn the Wii on, but seems to lose connection to the Wii immediately afterwards.

Anyway – I’d like to ask the following: is it possible for you to fix it? I’m aware there would be a charge, and I know it is out of warranty (it’s out of warranty due to it’s age anyway). Importantly, is it possible to keep both my saved games, and my Wii Shop downloaded titles? I don’t mind downloading them again, but I don’t want pay twice for them. My Animal Crossing saved game, in particular, if lost, would probably cause me medically incurable depression.

As Tom Nook would say, “Thanks much!”

Humility. For the win.
