Last week, Nintendo pushed out an update to Super Mario Maker which added some new features. You can now create massive spiky pillar-rams, and make use of locked doors with a new lock-and-key setup. It’s these keys which are of most interest to me, as they come in two versions.
Firstly, there’s a standard key which opens a locked door. You can put the key inside blocks, or assign them to baddies so you have to kill them for the key to come out. Secondly, you can place a number of new pink coins in your level, and when you collect them all, a key appears.
These pink coins in particular are great for hiding in places or using as rewards. Previously, people would often scatter 1ups around the level and the player would be tasked with finding them, but the problem was that there was no way of forcing players to do so, and lives (certainly more than three in a level) are irrelevant in Super Mario Maker anyway. This way is much better.
Anyway, I’ve created some more levels, some using these new mechanics, if you’d like to try them out! Like before, simply click these images to be taken to the official Super Mario Maker Bookmark page for the level.

This was my first test at hiding some pink coins. Two problems, I discovered: 1) You can see where they are in the level thumbnail, and 2) You can’t hide coins in things! I just assumed they’d be placeable in blocks and pipes and stuff. Apparently not!

In this one, two keys are needed to progress. The first is quite easy, but the second may need a little thought.

Lots of pink coins to collect, with different routes to each one and obstacles to traverse to get them all.

Find all of the pink coins, but there’s a dash for a door too so make sure you have them all (and another item!) before you hit the P! This level uses all the new features – pink coins, keys, locked doors, spiked columns, and P-doors.

Finally, Race Invader was created before the new gimmicks, and was me exploring how I could set up a sort of race to the finish. If you don’t get there fast enough, you’re blocked off from the goal! It’s a bit messy but it sort of works.
