Kirby: Planet Robobot (3DS): COMPLETED!

Kirby: Planet Robobot (3DS): COMPLETED!

You know, I hadn’t even realised Kirby: Planet Robobot was out already, and then I got it as a Father’s Day present. And it’s only bloody excellent.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

I know some recent-ish Kirby games have been a step away from the normal “inhale baddies, copy their abilities” model of old, so I was a little worried Planet Robobot might be similar, especially as the core addition is Kirby’s new mech suit. I needn’t have worried though, as this is proper Kirby – and when in the mech? It’s still proper Kirby.

Kirby: Planet RobobotHappy colourful levels with definitely Kirby-sounding music mixes with metallic surfaces and robots, but it’s clearly a standard Kirby game. There are multiple (usually two, sometimes more) planes of play, with Kirby popping into and out of the screen in fantastic 3D, but this just adds to the game rather than change anything fundamental. Some puzzles (mostly to obtain Core Cubes, needed to unlock boss levels) use this fore- and background swapping to great effect.

Kirby: Planet RobobotThe levels themselves are pretty big, although with 6 worlds (and a final boss fight 7th world) and just 4 or 5 levels in each it isn’t a large game overall. At least, I thought that until I’d beaten the game and two more modes unlocked! One of which is to play a modified “remix” of the game again, only as Meta Knight, who doesn’t have any copy ability nor does he have a mech suit. That will make some of the mini boss fights interesting!

Kirby: Planet RobobotThe game itself was incredibly good fun. I raced through it in just a few days mainly because it was so much fun I couldn’t put it down. Sure, it isn’t difficult either (I died maybe five times in total, ending the game with over 40 lives) although getting a few Core Cubes is pretty tricky – I’ve not collected them all so that’s something left to do. My only complaint would be in the SuckySuck(TM) Bit at the end where there’s a Boss Rush (albeit with a powered up suit which makes short work of them all) and then the final boss has a multitude of additional forms. Not hard, so not frustrating, but a bit clichéd.

Best Kirby game in ages. Probably since the SNES Kirby’s Dreamland 3, in fact.

  1. More of the same as last week, mainly. And some Shantae.
    Play
    Battlefield 4 (PS4)
I’m still not completely sure if I’m enjoying it a lot. I am a bit, sure, but it’s a bit dull. Almost every enemy encounter is the same (although that could be just because I like to snipe), and the plot has gone a bit mad (I now have to blow up a dam to flood the enemy out? Right), and everyone I expect to die has died so far. Still playing it though, so it must have something going for it.
    Kirby: Planet Robobot (3DS)
This was fantastic. Real proper return to form for Kirby. Not too hard, lots of variety, the new mechanics add to rather than mess with the formula, and it’s so happy and jolly and fun I almost do a squee every level. Definitely one of the best 3DS games. Oh, and I completed it of course. It was hard not to, it was so good.
Table Top Racing: World Tour (PS4)I really should stop playing this. It’s not actually very good and I’m not enjoying it much. It’s just too easy to boot it up for half an hour and play a few races. I’m over half way through now so might as well finish it up.
Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse (3DS)
I thought the GBC Shantae game when I played it not that long ago was great, so it’s not surprising that this game, which fixes the few issues I had with the original (which was too hard, had fiddly morph powers, some enemies took waaaay too many hits) and looks gorgeous. It might be rather too filled with boobladies (which are… eye popping in 3D) but that doesn’t stop it from being an impressive platformer that’s almost a Metroidvania.
    Want
Go on. Guess. Did you guess No Man’s Sky and Lego Marvel Avengers? Both for the PS4? If so, well done!
Also, Zelda for the NX. I think I’ll skip the Wii U version unless somehow that one ends up being better.
    Bin
The EU referendum, but I’ve covered that already. And yes, I’m still ill.
    Expense
    Unravel (PS4) £5.19Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (Wii U) £32.99

  2. In 2016, I completed a whopping 110 games. My previous record, because of course I’ve been keeping count, was 84 in 2015. You’d think with a number like that, I’d finally be on top of my backlog, right? Ahahahahano.
I didn’t anticipate completing that many. Like in previous years, I did strive to finish the RetroCollect 52 Game Challenge (which I managed before the end of June) and then expanded that to 104 games just for a laugh (and I sorted that by mid-December), but of course I had to go and beat that too, didn’t I?
There may be some arguments over what constitutes a “game”, and what counts as “completed”. There’s no hard and fast rule, whatever feels right for a title, usually. However, normally a game is “something you play” and “completed” is “reached the final goal”, “got all the achievements” or “watched the end credits” as appropriate.
DLC and addons are usually classed as separate games even if technically they’re not – like Life is Strange episodes, or the Lego Dimensions level packs.
Anyway, here’s the full list of 110:
