Fillum Review: Thir13en Ghosts (2001)

This was on at some point during the week, and my shiny new V+ box was set to record it. It’s a film that sort of interested me when it firm came out but I never actually watched. Got round to seeing it last night, and… was a bit disappointed.

Firstly, it isn’t scary. So I can’t put it down as a horror film, as it’s too silly. But then it can’t be a comedy (even though Five billed it as such) as it isn’t funny. I couldn’t say it was a thriller, as it was low on thrills, and the twists were either blatantly obvious or totally ridiculous. Drama? No. Adventure? Maybe. Great? Certainly not.

The characters were rubbish too – Dennis the psychic went from cowardly zero to brave hero in five seconds (and at some point in the film gained a swanky suit from somewhere, as if by magic). Cyrus still had a bloody neck and clothes even though he wasn’t dead (which didn’t make sense as he’d “died” some time previously), Maggie was in the film solely to provide black American female dialogue, and the kids were annoying (the boy) and brainless (the girl). And the woman who was supposedly saving the family (before the twist) was packing so much dynamite that there’s no way she could have been there for any other reason. And she was.

Verdict: 1/5
