Lethal gases don’t work weekends

Yesterday, our carbon monoxide monitor broke. I rang British Gas, and, since it was still under warranty, they told me to ring the manufacturer for a free replacement. So I did.

Unfortunately, although the replacement would indeed be free, we’d have to send it back, wait a bit, and then they’d send it back repaired (or replaced). The woman on the phone said it was possible that the Christmas post might mean we wouldn’t receive it until the new year.

I pointed out that we had a baby imminently due, and I didn’t want to spend that long without a monitor, and she said it was likely we’d have it in a week or so. I said we’d probably have a baby in that time. And then she said the most amazing thing ever:

You should be fine. It usually takes 7 to 10 working days for a lethal amount of gas to build up.

Phew! I never realised you were safe from carbon monoxide poisoning at the weekends!
