Another 18 months have passed, and once more it was time to play and complete one of the very best of all Mega Drive games – Mega-lo-Mania. It’s such a great game, and I could probably play it over and over until the end of time and never get bored.
As usual when I play, none of the AI players bothered to put any people into suspended animation for the final level, meaning instant win when I got that far. It’s a shame really, as I much prefer to actually fight on it.
Almost retro all the way this week. And Broforce. But Broforce is pretty much retro anyway isn’t it? OK, so entirely retro this week. My Raspberry Pi is getting a hammering! I didn’t even play Assassin’s Creed.
Play
Midnight Resistance (MD)
Average Contra clone. I completed it, but I don’t know why.
Mega-lo-Mania (MD)
One of the best games of all time, I’m pretty certain. Always a joy to play. Completed this too. Again.
Castle of Illusion (MS)
Nah, not the Mega Drive pile of tripe, the proper one. Another completed game too – doing well this week!
ToeJam and Earl (MD)
I think this is the first time I’ve completed it, certainly in the last decade or two anyway, when it has been set to Random World. Really hope the new ToeJam and Earl game lives up to how great this one is.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land (MS)
I never actually completed this, now or back in the day. I remember getting to the final boss, but couldn’t defeat him. Didn’t get anywhere near that far this week, mainly because I stupidly bought shoes when what I actually needed was a shield.
Various other retro games
In no particular order, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (GBA), Mr Heli (PCE), Killer Bees (Atari 5200), Teddy Boy (MS), Impossible Mission (MS), Kolibri (32X), Bubsy the Bobcat (MD) and Bubble Bobble (MS). Phew!
ZaciSa: Defense of the Crayon Dimensions Demo (Wii U)
It looks terrible, especially the UI on the gamepad, but it plays well and is a lot of fun. The full game is on offer at the moment and I’m tempted to get hold of it now.
Super Mario Maker (Wii U)
I’ll do a post about this another time, but as mentioned the other day, Nintendo have added some new features to the level creation. Notably, there are now keys and locked doors, so I’ve been creating new levels that make use of them. They certainly allow a lot more in the way of level types!
Broforce (PS4)
The more I play this the better it gets. There’s been an update which fixes bugs but not the only one that actually happens (where your character stops responding for a second or so soon after starting a level), and I got stuck on a boss for aaaaages, but the Just One More Go is strong with this one.
Puzzle & Dragons Z (3DS)
STILL. GRINDING. FOR. CHIPS.
Want
A repeat episode, I think:
No Man’s Sky (PS4)
The Internet(TM) was up in arms this week about the possibility – or not – of multiplayer not happening in the final game. I literally don’t care. I don’t think it had even crossed my mind it was on the cards in the first place (which it would appear, it wasn’t).
Lego Marvel Avengers (PS4)
Still haven’t started Lego Lord of the Rings so still haven’t got this. Still. Still.
HYRULE WARRIORS LEGENDS (3DS)
Obviously.
And of course, Firewatch, Star Fox Zero, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and Paper Mario Colour Splash.
Bin
Nothing, I don’t think.
Expense
Nothing at all this week. I’m a good boy.

Just like last year, this year I took part in the RetroCollect 52 Game Challenge. The idea was to complete, uh, 52 games in a single year. Back in June, I successfully became the first person taking part to hit the 52 game barrier. But I wasn’t going to stop there.
With the challenge over before the year was half done, I aimed for 104 games. The 104 Game Challenge, if you will. For the less mathematical of my readers, 104 is two lots of 52.
This week, with just 16 days left of the year to spare, I completed my 104th game. Which game? Lego Dimensions.
Now, some might say that I’ve played a lot of very short games this year, and it’s true that a large number of the titles I’ve finished have been the generally-shorter-anyway retro games, mainly for the Master System and Mega Drive. However, that’s not only allowed within the “rules”, but since it’s RetroCollect, almost certainly encouraged.
That said, there are a few very long games I’ve completed – and gone well past completion – this year. No Man’s Sky, for instance. That’s over 150 hours right there. 80 on Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, over 75 on Pokémon Y, and 30-60 each on Assassin’s Creed Unity, Lego Lord of the Rings, Lego Marvel Avengers, Fallout 4 and The Witness.

In 2016, I completed a whopping 110 games. My previous record, because of course I’ve been keeping count, was 84 in 2015. You’d think with a number like that, I’d finally be on top of my backlog, right? Ahahahahano.
I didn’t anticipate completing that many. Like in previous years, I did strive to finish the RetroCollect 52 Game Challenge (which I managed before the end of June) and then expanded that to 104 games just for a laugh (and I sorted that by mid-December), but of course I had to go and beat that too, didn’t I?
There may be some arguments over what constitutes a “game”, and what counts as “completed”. There’s no hard and fast rule, whatever feels right for a title, usually. However, normally a game is “something you play” and “completed” is “reached the final goal”, “got all the achievements” or “watched the end credits” as appropriate.
DLC and addons are usually classed as separate games even if technically they’re not – like Life is Strange episodes, or the Lego Dimensions level packs.
Anyway, here’s the full list of 110:
Fallout 4(PS4 15/01/2016)
Batman Returns(Lynx 24/01/2016)
