Volume Erase Failed

I tried to format a Buffalo 1TB external hard drive on my Mac today, to HFS+ (journalled). But it failed, over and over again with the error “Volume Erase Failed with the error: The underlying task reported failure on exit”. It was a brand new drive, already formatted as FAT, so I assumed it was faulty. Turns out, however, there’s a simple reason for it not working: you can’t format HFS+ partitions on certain external hard drives if the boot …

Tearaway (Vita): COMPLETED!

When Little Big Planet was announced, there was a lot of excitement over how innovative and clever and creative it was. And it was all those things, and it looked fantastic and everything. Then we all realised that it was just a platformer with horrible physics and a rubbish, game breaking and unnecessary third dimension. The fact that virtually all of the user made levels don’t bother with any level depth speaks volumes. Despite the lovely narration by Stephen Fry, …

There Can Be Only OneStation

I’m a sucker for gaming tat, so it was no surprise that as soon as the OneStation was shown to me, I bought one. And five game cartridges. After an agonising three week wait, it finally arrived from Hong Kong. Missing one cartridge. However, as will be revealed, that doesn’t actually matter. But wait! I’m getting ahead of myself! You all want to know… What the hell is a OneStation? Until it arrived, I wasn’t really sure. It appeared to …

Finally! A working Adobe CS3 install script!

After what seems like a year of aborted attempts, this week I’ve made a concerted effort to deploy Adobe CS3 Design Premium on our XP network. This morning, I was successful! There were several problems to overcome, including lack of MSIs, inability to “roll your own” MSI due to the Adobe Licencing Service throwing a wobbly if you do, inserting the serial number, forcing it to install on machines with under a gig of RAM, coping with the sheer size …

Audio problems on a HP Compaq nx6325

I’ve had a HP laptop in several times in the last week, suffering from severe audio stuttering – in Media Player, VLC, when playing DVDs, and even just playing the Windows start-up jingle. It’s almost like when I had a nasty 16-bit ISA soundcard in my ancient PC and tried to play Half-Life. We tried all sorts – scanning for viruses, defragging, reinstalling drivers, reducing the hardware acceleration, adding more memory, changing the volume… everything. But it still kept doing …

Fixing jrnl_wrap_error on Windows 2000 SYSVOL shares

I came across this strange thing today. One of the domain controllers wasn’t picking up new group policies. Basically, there were fewer folders in the policies folder in SYSVOL on that DC than in the others.¬¨‚Ć Looking at the event log, the following was thrown up: Event Type:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć Error Event Source:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć NtFrs Event Category:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć None Event ID:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć 13568 Date:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć ¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć 06/06/2008 Time:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć ¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć 12:17:46 User:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć ¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć N/A Computer:¬¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ƭ¨‚Ć GWEN Description: The File Replication Service has detected that the replica set …

The Problems with Grand Theft Auto IV

GTA IV arrived yesterday, and I was actually quite excited about playing it. Before it came out, I wasn’t all that fussed, actually, and was prepared to wait until it hit less than ¬¨¬£25 (because I won’t pay more than ¬¨¬£25 for a game), regardless how long that was. As it turned out, it was just one day. Since ordering it, my excitement did build a bit, and I was really looking forward to it. Sadly, I feel a bit …

PSP: First impressions

As my many loyal fans will know, I’m not really a fan of the PSP. I’m not that gay for Sony in general, actually, for reasons I can’t really be bothered to go into here. Again. So it may come as a surprise to some that yesterday I bought a shiny new PSP. A white Slim and Lite PSP, to be specific. Technically, I didn’t actually pay for it as I traded my (now, annoyingly, fully working) Premium Xbox 360 …
