You have, hopefully, noticed a speed increase in accessing this blog in the last couple of days. As I mentioned last week, things were running a bit slow so I put measures in place to improve matters.
One thing I also looked into is moving my hosting package. Not to a new host, but to a new contract with my current host. The one I’m on was great when I moved to it, ooh, eight years ago or whatever it was, but packages improve and prices come down over time and my existing setup remained as it was back then.
After looking at what I could get for the same money, I found I could get a contract which gives me everything I had but faster (it’s all on an SSD now), and I’m guaranteed 2GB RAM on the shared server – whereas before I had 80MB maximum, often less. The new package also lets me leverage some whizzy CDN thing which should help with speeds too.
Everything has now moved over, although I still need to migrate the databases for other parts of my site to the new SSD hosted ones. This blog is done, though, and benchmarking my blog main page shows a load time of 15+ seconds has dropped to 2-3 seconds. The backend of WordPress is a lot snappier too, so I’m really pleased.
As before, any problems – I’m sure there’ll be some – let me know!
In other mostly unrelated news, I’ve flashed my PocketCHIP with the latest firmware, which now does 3D acceleration! OK, so it’s upgrading and speeding up, so it’s sort of related. One day I’ll get round to writing a post about the PocketCHIP. Honest I will.
