Fillum review: North by Northwest (1959)

You know, even though I’d not seen this before, the number of take-off and parodies I’d seen in things like The Simpsons and Family Guy made it feel like it was a repeat. Of course, I didn’t really know the plot (and there were a few twists in it anyway), but I started thinking to myself – “this is the bit where…”. Which I suppose is testament to it’s classic film status, really. There are a few jarring special effects …

No, it isn’t here yet

And with very few minutes of the day left, it seems unlikely it will be today. I’ve been telling everyone the baby will actually arrive exactly on time, but it would appear I am wrong. Of course, I didn’t say which time zone, so it’s still possible…

Round and round and round

I finally got round to renaming my new (now six months old) PC to its perminent name today. Or at least, I tried.¬¨‚Ć Normally, I’d go to System in the Control Panel, and rename from there, but when I tried that… (click it for bigger!) It seems that Windows found an error, and to fix it wants me to try renaming the computer (like I’m doing) using System, in the Control Panel. You know, like I’m doing.

Fillum review: The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)

Based on a comic series I’ve never seen, the film groups fictional characters from popular 19th century literature together as a sort of Victorian Justice League. Naturally, they have enemies who are also fictional characters from popular 19th century literature. Evil enemies who want to cause a war then profit from it by selling technology and science to the opposing factions! Considering the film is set in 1899, the number of 20th century inventions littering it seem out of place …

Lethal gases don’t work weekends

Yesterday, our carbon monoxide monitor broke. I rang British Gas, and, since it was still under warranty, they told me to ring the manufacturer for a free replacement. So I did. Unfortunately, although the replacement would indeed be free, we’d have to send it back, wait a bit, and then they’d send it back repaired (or replaced). The woman on the phone said it was possible that the Christmas post might mean we wouldn’t receive it until the new year. …

Dell software piracy

Today at work, I took delivery of a shiny new Dell Mac mini Studio Hybrid. I booted it up, and was confronted with this: That’s nice, isn’t it? I’m accused of being a criminal before I’ve even started using the thing. Amazing! So I clicked “Go online and resolve now”, which took me to this message: I’m not surprised it was invalid. I haven’t typed anything yet – it’s not given me the option!¬¨‚Ć I tried typing a “different” product …

Engage!

Today was our final planned trip to see the midwife before the baby is due. We’ve got another appointment for a few days after its due date just in case it hasn’t arrived by then, but all being well today was the last one. And pretty much everything was OK. The heartbeat and size and all that was as expected. We were also told that the baby’s head was now 3/5ths engaged. Hence the picture of Picard up there doing …
