From the dawn of time: ugvm 04

Time for another one of these, I think. There was a bit of fallout from the text adventures feature in issue 03, and the cover art was stepped up a notch. Reading it now, I’m reminded of a couple of great (but probably forgotten) gems – Doshin the Giant and Pac-Man Collection. Ah, fun times. Yes, there are more games

I’ve finally got round to adding a pile more games to my museum section. And, having stuck them all in the database and scanned them all, I realised I have another pile on my desk. Oh well. They can wait. Amongst the games added today includes the not-played-yet and probably-not-great Rise of the Argonauts by Codemasters, which is notable because I won it in a competition a few weeks ago, along with a matching Xbox 360 faceplate. So much for …

My picks of E3

Overall, I was a bit disappointed that there weren’t more proper new games at E3 this year. There were plenty of good games, but most have either been known about for ages, or were sequels. So, what I’m looking forward to:

inFamous

I don’t have a PS3, but if I did, this would interest me. I loved Crackdown, and it seems to have a similar sort of feel to it. The blurb: In the aftermath of an urban disaster, an everyday guy finds himself with extraordinary powers. What he does with them is up to you. Welcome to inFamous, the sensational new title for PLAYSTATION¬¨?Ü3 If society collapsed tomorrow and you found yourself with unique powers that could either help people or …

From the dawn of time: ugvm 03

I think with Issue 03, our retro issue, we really hit the big time. The ugvm site got slashdotted, the bandwidth costs spiralled to ¬¨¬£244 for just one weekend, and we were swamped with emails. Mostly complaints about Tim saying interaction fiction was dead, which he didn’t quite say, but still – the publicity took us to over 10,000 subscribers. 10,000! Thats more than many print-based magazines! My 360 RIP, part VIII

It’s back! Hurrah! And, to my surprise, it works. Sadly, not everything is perfect with it now, but I can manage. Firstly, the clips that hold the faceplate on have been bent so the top of the faceplate is a few millimetres proud of the rest of the 360’s case. Secondly, I’ve had to re-download about half of my XBLA games as they’d reverted to trial versions (when logged in as another user). Why only about half of them, I …

Amazing random post today

I got a parcel in the post today. I thought it was going to be some Xbox 360 game and faceplate I won in a competition a few weeks ago, as I wasn’t expecting anything else (besides my 360, of course, but that was coming via UPS not Royal Fail). Anyway, somehow, I managed to guess what it was simply by rattling it. And what was it? This! It was a slightly belated birthday present from my sister. Told you …

Cold Caller Games #1: Hello? Hello?

At work, I get a lot of phonecalls from those recorded messages offering me cheap mortgages, help with my debts, free international calls, discounts on badger feed and that sort of thing. You know the ones – you pick up the phone and say hello, then after a couple of seconds a recording kicks in explaining the offer then asking you to press a number. Of course, on my own phone I’d hang up before they even explained who they …

Here’s another issue of everyone’s favourite free downloadable gaming magazine that no longer exists! From the dawn of time: ugvm 01

Remember that magazine I used to edit? Years and years ago? Of course you don’t. You probably weren’t born then. Well, using the great online service Issuu, I’ve brought them back from the dead! There aren’t any new issues, but you can “enjoy” reading all the old ones again, and shed a little tear for the time when we were at the forefront of online gaming magazine technology. Or something. Behold: Issue 01! My 360 RIP, part VI

In an unwanted return to the “My 360 RIP” series, my lovely 360 Elite has just died, with the E74 one-red-light error. Bah. It seems this error is covered for repair even though my warranty expired only a few days ago, so I’ve sent off a repair request to Microsoft. Watch this space!
