My new Megadrive

Play Asia started selling these recently. They look like a Megadrive variant of the many Famicom “famiclones” out there, but they’re not – they’re officially licenced by Sega! And they’re really cheap too, coming in at under ¬¨¬£20. You get 20 games built into the unit, but it also has a cartridge slot to play original (and forthcoming re-released) cartridges. I tested it with quite a few games of varying geographic origin, and aside from the UK version of Street …

A bit of a catchup

I haven’t posted in a few days, but I have been playing things. Just been a bit busy and tired and stuff. Anyway, here’s what I’ve been up to this week: Fable II Pub Games Demo (360)Marginally entertaining collection of gambling games. If I was interested in buying Fable II (I’m not), and it was 400 points, I’d buy it. So I’m not, then. Bionic Commando Rearmed Demo (360)Quite good fun, although I can’t get used to having no jump …

New server desktop wallpaper

At work, I’ve facetiously named all our servers with actual proper names. “Server 1” or “Mail Server” are dull, boring, and – most importantly – rubbish names for servers. So they have names. Some were named after specific people, others were named because the machines were different colours and the name started with the same letter as the colour. Roxy is the Proxy. So there’s no real pattern to them all. Anyway. This week, we killed several of the older …

Birthday meme

OK. I’m not sure of the point of this, but anyway: Look up your birthday in Wikipedia. Pick 4 events, 3 births, 2 deaths, and 1 holiday. May 15th Events 1718 – James Puckle, a London lawyer, patents the world’s first machine gun. 1756 – The Seven Years’ War begins when England declares war on France. 1940 – World War II: After fierce fighting, the poorly trained and equipped Dutch troops surrender to Germany, marking the beginning of five years …

How I fixed my iPod nano

Please note: this fix requires doing things to your iPod that you wouldn’t normally do. Even though I’m certain they’re safe, I can’t be held responsible if you knacker it following these instructions! How frustrating. After almost a year’s loyal service, I went to charge up my 3G iPod nano before a trip, only to find it wasn’t working. It would turn on, but after about 5 seconds of showing the menu, it would reset itself. Over and over again. …

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (PSP)

I was away for the weekend, and this is the only game I thought to take with me. And it’s very good. Sadly, it isn’t quite as good as its predecessor, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, mainly for menu and display reasons, but a decent SRPG is a decent SRPG, and very soon I’d plowed over 6 hours into it. Difficulty is all over the place at the moment. The first couple of battles were reasonably easy, and all of the …

Fillum review: Batman Forever (1995)

No, I haven’t seen The Dark Knight yet. But this’ll do, yes? Sort of. Unlike the first two 1990s Batman films, which were a bit dark and "grown-up", Batman Forever doesn’t pretend to be much more than a film based on the 60s series. It’s a comedy. The baddies, The Riddler and Two-Face, are maniacal in the same way the baddies in 60s Batman were. It’s all bright colours and puns and silliness. The plot doesn’t make much sense. There …

Writing a speech

My baby brother is getting married next weekend. Again. He actually got married a couple of months ago, eloping to Canada with his then-bride-to-be, but he’s having a wedding blessing with vow renewal ceremony in this country on Saturday. I thought they only renewed wedding vows in Neighbours, but it would appear I was mistaken! Anyway, I’ve been asked to be his Best Man. After all, I am a Man, and I am Best, so it makes sense. It’s not …

Braid (360): COMPLETED!

Well, I don’t know what happened, but everything I was struggling with last night clicked today, and bar a couple of head-scratchers, I didn’t have any real problems completing the rest of the game. It was very lovely, and there is some “find the stars” thing I could still do which is completely impossible without a guide, but at just over two hours long it wasn’t really the epic puzzler I was expecting. But is it art? Oh yes, definitely.

What are they planning?

I came home yesterday to find the council marking the pavement behind my Allocated Parking Space(TM) with yellow paint. They’d done the same down the street. What are they up to? On a related note, why are half the roads in Norwich currently, and somewhat suddenly, being resurfaced?
