Gameking – Unleash the Games!

<< Previous (The Gameking) Gameking Games Readers without short-term memory problems will recall that I bought 13 games to go with my Gameking. Each and every one is special in its own special way. Special as in “special needs”, naturally. Firstly, a few points about Gameking games. The cartridges are strikingly familiar to anyone who has ever played on a Game Boy, since they’re exactly the same as Game Boy cartridges. Almost, anyway – instead of “Game Boy” they say …

Top 10 Obscure Games

I’ve often said that I love buying games that are bizarre and obscure. Usually, they’re crap – which often explains why they’re pretty obscure. Sometimes, though, they’re great. By obscure I mean they’re pretty much unheard of to the general gaming public. This is either because they’re for a machine never released in whatever region of the world they’re in, or the game bombed so nobody bought it (these games aren’t always bad, surprisingly), or even just that nobody forgot …

Emulation Newbies

New to the Emulation scene? Don’t understand terms like ‘roms’, ‘hardfiles’ and ‘disk images’? Want to get the best performance from your emulator? If so, then read on! This page is designed to aid people who are new to emulation, and to help you get the most from your emulator. It is by no means a complete HOWTO for emulation, but it will point you in the right direction. Due to the huge variety of type, styles and platforms for …

In defence of the Wii

Nintendo’s Wii gets a bit of a hard time on gaming forums and newsgroups. In the eyes of many, it’s still a console for kids and/or old people. If you enjoy playing Wii games, the 360 and PS3 owners sneer at you as if you can’t afford a “proper” console (even though the 360 is cheaper!). They wonder how you can possibly like playing games with “last gen graphics” and “tacked on waggle”. What they’re not realising, is that graphics …

Castlevania Rebirth (Wii): COMPLETED!

This is how I want new additions to old 8 and 16-bit game serieses to be made. As if they’re for 8 and 8-bit consoles. Like Megaman 9 was. Rebirth is a remake (or rather, complete rewrite borrowing nothing but the plot) of The Castlevania Adventure for the Game Boy. A game I played, and completed, almost exactly three years ago. It was rubbish. Rebirth, is not. It looks like a SNES game, only with more detailed sprites. It plays …

2009: The Games

I was surprised that, despite having a baby at Christmas last year, I was still able to play games in 2009. It seems babies sleep! Not that I’d have imagined that in our first few days with her at home. More surprising, is that I’ve somehow managed to complete a total of 43 games in the last 12 months. In 2008, I “only” completed 33. But the best games of 2009? That’s an ask, isn’t it? Mainly because I’m pretty …

The games of 2008

For four years now, I’ve kept a diary detailing the games I play. Part of the reason was to see how many games I buy (and to reduce this number), and how many I complete (and to increase this number). 2008 saw a drop in completed games – 33 compared to 61 in 2007. I don’t think this is bad, when you look at the games I’ve been completing. In 2007, there were quite a few shorter games, including 5 …

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (GBA)

This arrived in the post today, along with some other stuff, from Play Asia. And, since ugvm Retro Week has been extended into this week, it was ideal for playing! Or so I thought. It turns out that in the process of simply porting the original Megadrive Sonic game to the GBA, Sega couldn’t help but rape my childhood memories by making it worse than those shoddy “fan-made” Flash-based Sonic games. It has more issues than a journal library. Par …

Patapon (PSP)

After many, many more attempts, I finally managed to save Meden. I’d tried every combination of Patapon armies to do it, but in the end my standard Tate/Yari/Yumi setup was enough. Then it was off to fight a harder version of the crab boss I killed earlier, who dropped the ability to create Megapons. I haven’t made any yet, though. I did, however, come up against some (sort of) in the next mission – where I had to kill off …

Sonic the Hedgehog: Again

Around this time last year, I bought Sonic the Hedgehog on the Wii Virtual Console.¬¨‚Ć In case you’re not aware, the VC is a download service on the Wii where you can buy, download and play old console games, including the Megadrive version of Sonic. Then, about six months ago, I bought Sonic the Hedgehog on the Xbox 360’s Live Arcade. In case you’re not aware, XBLA is a download service on the Xbox 360 where you can buy, download …

Assorted Games (Wii)

I went and picked up my Wii this morning, and so much of the day has been spent playing on it. The verdict? It’s ACES. Firstly, I played Wii Sports and had a go with the baseball, tennis and boxing games. They’re all pretty good, but boxing is sheer genius. You use the remote and the nunchuk as boxing gloves and actually punch and block with them. Amazing. Had a few goes on the bowling game then, and lost to …
