From the dawn of time: ugvm 03

I think with Issue 03, our retro issue, we really hit the big time. The ugvm site got slashdotted, the bandwidth costs spiralled to ¬¨¬£244 for just one weekend, and we were swamped with emails. Mostly complaints about Tim saying interaction fiction was dead, which he didn’t quite say, but still – the publicity took us to over 10,000 subscribers. 10,000! Thats more than many print-based magazines! The demise of the Playstation 3

Or even, PLAYSTATION 3, as Sony had decreed that you must spell it in all caps. You know, like eleven year old idiots do when they post on online forums. Over here in the UK, the Playstation 3 (I’m not 11) will be released next Friday. Just like the 360 and Wii launches, the media is in a frenzy and retailers are being swamped with pre-order enquiries. Unlike the 360 and Wii launches, however, the enquiries are “Can I cancel …

Prey (360)

Played quite a bit now, and got past rescuing Jen (only for her to be kidnapped again), did some flying around in a vehicle thing, which was odd, and faught what could be considered a few boss battles. I’m on level 14-ish now, and the levels do seem to be getting shorter and shorter – just like Amped 3 and Tomb Raider: Legend. Is this a 360 game trend? Had some more play online too. The lag was slightly better …

Saints Row (Demo) (360)

Had another short play on this, but didn’t do anything constructive. Overall, I’m quite disappointed with it. The main thing it lacks over GTA (and there’s no way to talk about Saints Row without mentioning GTA), in my opinion, is bikes. I loved the bikes in That Other Series, and since Saints Row doesn’t have any, I’m not enjoying it as much. That said, the combat is a lot better, and the number of things you can just kick around …

Vampire Survivors (Steam Deck): COMPLETED!

Let it be known: I actually spent actual money (rather than money gained from selling farmed trading cards) on this Steam game. I don’t think I’ve ever done that before. The things a Steam Deck make you do. I’ve wanted it for some time. Yes, it looks a bit pants and yes it’s cheap and yes, yes it rips off the Castlevania aesthetic to the point of why-hasn’t-Konami-stepped-in, but there was something interesting about how you just get ridiculously overpowered …

Dynamite Headdy (Switch): COMPLETED!

Even though I own three copies of this, or perhaps even more, and it had great reviews at the time, AND I like Treasure’s games, it surprises me that I’ve never played it past the first level or two. It wasn’t because it was hard (it wasn’t, but… see later), or I didn’t enjoy it, so who knows. Only this time, while flicking through the Mega Drive Collection on my Switch for something to play, it caught my eye and …

Lego Jurassic World (PS4): COMPLETED!

My daughter loves Lego games and loves dinosaurs, so it was an obvious choice to get Lego Jurassic World at some point. Even if I do keep calling it Lego Jurassic Park. She’d not seen the films, but the game did mean she could watch the films without being too scared, and we have watched the first one now. One thing I hadn’t realised until we played this is how the T-Rex, rather than being the frightening terror she appears to …

Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree

Apparently, Mr Larry Bodine had a bit of trouble with his brand new dual-G5 Power Mac. I’m not surprised, as most of what it supposedly came installed with simply doesn’t exist. His tirade against Apple is somewhat lacking in facts, and he seems unsure as to what actual software he’s running. In one paragraph, he states he’s struggled along with Internet Explorer 5.0, but in another he’s using Tiger’s widgets. The killer is, IE5.0 won’t run on, and doesn’t come …

Tony Hawk’s Underground (GBA)

Still in San Diego, and the difficulty of the game seems to have ramped up somewhat now. Things like “get 250,000 in one combo” are the way to go at the moment, and one particulat “do these three tricks in one combo” goal was more than a little difficult. Still, not much more left to do and then I’m on to the final level.
