The Backlog

Anyone who describes themselves as a gamer, or even those who read a lot of books, collect DVDs (remember them?) or are avid fans of various other arts, know about The Backlog. It is, as a gamer at least, a list of games that have been bought (or acquired – most games are “free” these days) under the full intent to play, but for whatever reason are Pushed on the stack and have not yet reached Pop. Why these games …

Into the Breach (Switch): COMPLETED!

I’m not sure following Mario + Rabbids with another, but totally different, turn based strategy game was necessarily the best way to get started with Into the Breach. For starters, moves are done in the opposite order (baddies first) and baddie attacks are “locked” in that they’ll still attack the same direction and number of spaces away even when moved during your turn. This is a core gameplay mechanic, and is pretty clever, as you can force them to fire …

Assorted Xbox 360 Demos (360)

Caught up a bit tonight with some of the recent demos on the 360’s mrketplace. Frogger 2No. No no no. It’s like a horrible cute reimagining of Frogger, designed by a three year old. It’s horrible. And why on earth are there rotate button? And a bloody UFO?! And! The most irritating music and sound effect combo ever (especially when collecting lots of coins in one go – yes coins: why the hell does a frog need coins?). It’s all …

Touch Detective (DS): COMPLETED!

Although I’m not really sure I understand all the motives behind the final case, nor about the “earthquake!” scene. I’m still very confused. But after doing the last case, I spent an hour or so clearing up the Bonus Episode, which although I seem to have finished (no-one else is giving me tasks), I haven’t filled the Investigation Journal. I wonder why? Anyway. The game is done and the touch log is at almost 100% done, so it’s not like …

Some Xbox 360 Demo Games (360)

So I downloaded a few more game demos today. First off, was Full Auto, which is very much like Burnout only with guns. And a Prince of Persia-style time-rewind system. It plays nice and all, but it doesn’t look much better than Burnout 3. In fact, in some ways, it’s actually worse visually. Probably not a game I’ll be buying any time soon, sorry Sega… Then I played Quake 4. I don’t mind FPS games, but they’re not my favourite …

Mario Kart DS

50cc Mode Complet0red! I’ve been though all the Cups now, with maximum points on them all, and unlocked Daisy as a new character. I then went and did some more of the Missions, and completed all of levels 1, 2, 3 and 4. There are even bosses in that mode! After that, I played some Me vs 7 CPU Battle Mode. For some reason, they all started with three balloons, but I only started with one. Which was a bit …

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Did some more wandering round, finding more items. I picked up the Magic Cape, which makes me invisible, and two more heart pieces. I also found the Quake Medallion and the Magic Powder. Not only that, but I’ve now had my magic meter effectively doubled too – just as well, since the Magic Cape drains it somewhat quickly. Then it was on to Dungeon 4. This dungeon was pretty small, and fairly straightforward. The “weapon” was the Titan Mitt, which …

Populous

Two more levels done today. I’m up to level 15 now (yes, that does add up if you know how Populous works). A desert level and an ice level today. The computer is getting slightly harder now, and can swamp, earthquake, and even volcano me. Sadly for him, he’s also a bit rubbish at watching his own back. Besides, volcanoing a few of my castles has little or no effect when I have some 60 of them (versus his three). …
