2011: The Games

It’s a little later in the year than usual, but, as is traditional, here’s my list of the best games of 2011. Also as previously noted, this is a list of the best five games I played in 2011, not necessarily those that came out then. As is becoming more common, I’m buying games well after release when they’re cheap. 5. escapeVektor (Wii) Criminally overlooked, this WiiWare gem is a fantastic Painter-type arcade game. I played it from start to finish …

The PS3, Two Months On

You may recall that just over two months ago, my brain became sick and I bought a Playstation 3. A 160GB Playstation 3 Slim, to be more specific. Even though I’ve hated everything Sony have ever made, and after the mistake I made getting a PSP, I promised myself I’d never buy a PS3. So I bought a PS3. Buh. Now I’ve had it a bit longer, and PSN is back up properly (sort of), and I’ve downloaded some games …

Sam & Max: Beyond Time and Space: Episode 1 (360): COMPLETED

With Back to the Future out of the way, I really needed to do more Telltale point-and-clicky stuff. I’ve been after Season 2 of Sam & Max for the Wii for ages, but it was delayed and delayed, and then when it finally did come out, immediately went out of stock everywhere never to return. So I sucked it up and got it on XBLA instead. It follows on pretty much from the end of the last episode of the …

de Blob 2 (360): COMPLETED!

With Back to the Future out of the way (at least until Telltale decide to actually release the next one) I returned to de Blob 2, which I was previously about a quarter of the way through. It’s really very good. It improves over the first game in several areas, mainly with fewer required “paint these building specific colours” missions, and some great 2D platforming sections. The fact that you can save after any checkpoint is a big improvement too, …

Fillum review: Twelve Monkeys (1995)

When this first came out, I watched it three times in a single weekend, as it seemed necessary to do so in order to make sense of the story. This time around, however, despite not having seen it in more than ten years, I didn’t have to. I don’t know if that’s because I subconciously remembered the bits I needed to pay attention to, or whether I got lucky, but still – you have to concentrate or things really do …

Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages

More wandering around Symmetry City, and it turns out I’d missed a house to go in. Got the broken Tuni Nut, and went off to see Tokkey up the mountain. I played my harp to him, and he gave me another tune that now lets be go back to the future (TM) whereever I want. With this, I made it up some wall to get the nut repaired (which involved some silly minigame), and went back to Symmetry City. Oh …

Shadows Over Loathing (Switch): COMPLETED!

I really enjoyed West of Loathing, so I’m not sure why I took so long to get round to the sequel (actually, I do – All The Games). And what a game it is. Well, it’s the same as the previous game. Of course, it isn’t, but everything that was great about that is still great here. Time has moved on a bit, so instead of being set in the Old West, Shadows Over Loathing is set in The Big …

Doraemon: Story of Seasons (Switch): COMPLETED!

It’s been a while since I went cold turkey on Animal Crossing, so I thought I’d inject a bit of something similar when this came up on sale on the Switch eShop. Apparently it’s the first Doraemon game to be officially localised for the West, but it’s also a Story of Seasons (née Harvest Moon) crossover title. How that robot cat/farming game amalgamation works is like this: The plot is about Noby, Doraemon and chums being magically sent back in …

Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (Switch): COMPLETED!

Although I don’t really have any affinity for Fire Emblem, that hasn’t put me off getting hooked by series spinoffs in the past – Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and the first Fire Emblem Warriors are two of my favourite games, but the old strategy titles I could take or leave. Not because they’re bad, just because they’re not Advance Wars and permadeath (which I know can be turned off these days) is scary. Three Hopes is a musou Warriors-style reimagining …
