Red Dead Redemption (360): COMPLETED!

Well. That was a twist. Sort of. I suppose if I’d read the signs I’d have realised the game couldn’t really end any other way. Dutch pretty much tells you what’s going to happen anyway. But it was more the stuff after that which I’d not expected at all. Yes, this is very vague if you’ve not completed it. Let me just say that the dialogue logic for all the stranger and random encounters must have been one hell of …

Sonic the Hedgehog (DS)

T’other day I found myself in HMV and happened upon Sonic Classics Collection (Sonic 1-3 and Sonic & Knuckles) for the DS. I’d heard about it ages ago, but don’t remember it actually coming out. As is the way with Sonic games of old (and sadly, often of new), I had to buy it. So I did! And it’s the most faithful version of Sonic I’ve played on a handheld. OK, so it seems the screen resolution is slightly too …

Red Dead Redemption (360)

Had a bit of a marathon session of this over the last few days – not least 6 hours straight on Friday. Not done that sort of gaming run in years! Ended up having real-world RDR encounters (saw some flowers that looked like wild fever-few – fought the urge to pick them, saw crows – wanted to shoot them) like I used to with Tony Hawk games. I think I’m nearing the end now. I’ve reached Blackwater, found where the …

Red Dead Redemption (360)

Er, so Henry Hatsworth got too hard. The Captain Boss and his nurse are impossible. I’ve put it to one side (code for “probably never play again”) and started something new. Or old, but new to me. Now, I hate westerns. And I hate cowboys. And I even hated Sunset Riders which lots of people think is ace. But I love (at least, I do now – didn’t like it at first) GTA IV and this is, pretty much, a …

Baywatch vs Erasure

“Blue Savannah” by Erasure popped up on random play this morning, and something about it was familiar. I don’t mean the song, as I’ve obviously heard it before (yes, I like Erasure), but I’d heard it before… somewhere else. Then it hit me: the piano riff is also in the theme to Baywatch (no, I don’t like – or watch – Baywatch). Apparently, the theme is called “I’m Always Here”. Anyway, to prove I’ve not gone a bit mad: Blue …

Fixing Windows Update error 8000ffff

One of our Windows 2008 servers threw a wobbly (technical term) after a power cut a few weeks ago, and although I got it working again, it wouldn’t install updates, giving error code 8000ffff each time. The usual searches of the internets suggested a common fault with Vista on Dell machines, but none of the proposed fixes seemed to work. They included uninstalling an update I didn’t have installed, running a Microsoft “Fix It” tool, which didn’t work, and installing …

Detana!! TwinBee (360): COMPLETED!

Yeah, so I bought a Game Room game. I said I wouldn’t because it would mean that, due to the games costing 240 points each, I’d end up with a number of Microsoft Points that wasn’t a multiple of 100. Which, due to OCD, makes me uncomfortable. But I did need Detana!! TwinBee. So I had to buy 5 games at 240 points each to “fix” the points. Aha, yes, I’m mentally ill. First off, I played in Ranked Mode, …

Let’s Play! Tubaruba

In the days of 8-bit gaming, there were over $hlmun platform games. It’s not really surprising, given the excellence and popularity of Jet Set Willy and Manic Miner. One of the platform collect-’em-ups I remember most vividly was Tubaruba, not least because of Tooba Zaidi, the horrifically named programmer who appears in the game. And the frightening way he speaks white noise at you. Also, despite what one of the possible commentators on this post may tell you, the Speccy …

Dear Activision (An Open Letter about the 3DS)

Dear Activision, Now I know we rarely see eye to eye these days. Back in the days of the Atari 2600, you could do no wrong and provided me with so many hours of pleasure with your Pitfall and Frostbite and Keystone Kapers, and two decades later provided me with Tony Hawk – perhaps my most beloved of all non-platforming game series. Unfortunately, things have become a little tense between us in recent years with the murdering of the the …

Reeling in a scammer

This never works, but it’s always worth a go to see how far things progress. Earlier this week, I got the following email: Hi Sales, Am Mr Henry Romans. I want to place an order from you. I know the difficulties encountered when shipping internationally, But that will not be a problem because i am registered with a shipping company whom i have used severally without any delay nor problems with my goods. Before i place these order, i want …

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure (DS)

OK, I’m starting to flag now. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s the size of the levels – which are HUGE. Probably too huge, actually. When was the last time you played a 2D platformer where some levels were almost an hour long? Yes, some of the time is spent puzzling not run-and-jumping, but still – it’s ages. Especially since you can’t save mid-level. It’s getting harder too. I’ve lost a few lives now, but still have over 20 in …
