Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS): COMPLETED!

That final case was all over the place. Not least when the real villain was revealed, and then that person was really revealed. Twists and turns everywhere, which pretty much nobody being quite what I expected. And that’s it! More than 23 hours, making it the longest Phoenix Wright game by around 5 hours. Not bad considering this one is more streamlined than the others. But it’s not over yet! Capcom announced a DLC extra chapter this week, and that’s due …

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS)

So, so good. The plots in these cases are just so well thought out. The way Apollo/Athena/Phoenix suddenly turn an inescapable “guilty” verdict into the exact opposite by reversing the way the murder could have been committed is always masterful. The drama in the courtroom is tense, and the buildups to the end of each case are as adrenalin fuelled as much as any FPS boss battle. Not bad for an interactive story about lawyers… This evening I finished up …

Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)

And still I’m playing this. I’ve yet to miss a single day of play, in fact. That puts me past the number of consecutive days played of any previous version for sure, and, past the number of days in total I’ve played both Wild World and Let’s Go To The City. I don’t recall how many days I actually played the Gamecube version for though. I know it was a lot, and pretty much a year from start to finish, …

Making MacPorts work again after upgrading to Mavericks

Although pretty much everything “just works” after upgrading from Lion/Mountain Lion to Mavericks, one thing that doesn’t is MacPorts. Well, it still works, or at least it did for me, but you’re unable to upgrade it or install more ports, as they all fail with various error messages (including “Error: org.macports.extract for port gperf returned: command execution failed”), and the usual sudo port selfupdate just gives the message MacPorts base version 2.2.1 downloaded. —> Updating the ports tree —> MacPorts base …

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies (3DS)

It was touch and go for a while as to whether this game would even see light of day in the West. After all, the series is not as popular as it once was, and the two “interim spin-offs” starring Edgeworth were not well received. In fact, the second of these remained Japan-only. Thankfully, a Capcom saw sense, and even though it’s an eShop exclusive, here it is. Capcom have done a fantastic job of updating the visuals for the …

Updated: How to upgrade your 3DS SD card, to 64GB and beyond

UPDATE 15th January 2015: I’ve updated this guide again to cover transferring data to a New 3DS here. Please use this link here from now on: Upgrading your 3DS SD card, your 3DS, or both. A while back I put together this guide for migrating all your 3DS games and files from one SD card to another. It’s one of my most popular articles, and somehow (thanks to you lot for recommending it) it has become the de-facto way of doing …

The Wonderful 101 (Wii U)

So I fixed it. Deleting the game from the hard drive and redownloading it, somehow, fixed all the control issues. No, I don’t know how. Now, I can draw whatever Unite form I want and it works every time. And it’s a good job too, because it turns out when it works properly, the game is awesome. I’m able to dodge or block attacks now. I don’t have to spend half my play time fighting the controls. I’m really enjoying …

Games I’ve been playing recently

Another roundup! Woo! Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) I’ve played this every single day now for more than four months, and you’d think it’d have grown old by now. But no – I’m still finding new things to do. Being October I’m collecting Spooky Furniture, and this week I managed to pass Gracie’s 4th and final test so she’s now opened up a store inside newly renovated T&T’s. Excellent. Luigi’s Mansion 2 (3DS) Still in the Clock Tower, but have …

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (360): COMPLETED!

Urgh. I really didn’t enjoy that. And, without spoiling it for anyone else, I can’t really explain why. I didn’t get used to the two-person, two-sticks controls. The camera caused a few issues (in the snowy area, specifically, and on the final “boss”), and it was far too easy. But they are not the reasons I didn’t like it. No, it was the story. The last bit of the story. Far too grim for me, especially the bit you do …

How I’d design the next Zelda game

An open letter to Nintendo: Much has been speculated about the upcoming Wii U Zelda game. No, not The Wind Waker HD – the new one, currently due to be revealed at E3 next year. Current word is that Nintendo would like to make it more open world. Possibly multiplayer. They want to move away from traditional Zelda games and move the series on. Rubbish. What makes Zelda is being Zelda. With the overworld and the dungeons. The “gimmick” changes …

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons (360)

I’m torn. On one hand, this a beautiful, heart-wrenching puzzle-platformer. On the other hand, it’s ICO. Now, I sort of liked ICO. I liked the idea. I liked some of the puzzles. I liked the setting and the graphics (although the horrible low-res made my eyes explode). I didn’t like all the dragging Yorda round and stopping her getting killed, though. This doesn’t have a lot of that, and the graphics are several billion times easier on the eyes, but …

Luigi’s Mansion 2 (3DS)

It’s slow going through the Mansions. Not because I don’t like the game – quite the opposite. More the way I’m playing. Since the game is split into missions, each about 20-30 minutes long, I’ve only been doing one or two at a time. Which would still be quite quick, if it wasn’t for the fact that every time I turn my 3DS on, oh look – there’s Animal Crossing. “Just 5 minutes” on Animal Crossing turns into “oh, no …

Bastion (360): COMPLETED!

A beautiful game. Gorgeous to look at. Fantastic music. Fun to play. Somewhat short, and incredibly easy (I didn’t die at all, ever), but really, really good. After a few levels, I’d settled on the Fang Repeater and Machete as my weapon paring of choice. I set my special attack as the spinning shield thing, but frankly, I never needed it. Of course, I’d pick up other weapons along the way, but until I found the Calamity Cannon I swapped …

Bastion (360)

After finishing Rayman, I found myself without a “currently playing” console game. Sure, I have a few that I’ve finished but not 100%ed, that I could have returned to (like Lego Harry Potter 2, Skylanders, or more Rayman), and yeah, I’ve Luigi’s Mansion on the go for “on the go”, and sure, I have The Wonderful 101 sat there unplayed… but I thought I’d play Bastion. I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I’d been told it was good, and …
