New tiny Wii controllers, with sweets
No, not these ones here, which are about 2/3rds the size of a normal controller. These ones here, that I saw in Adsa this week – that are less than half the size: The best thing is that they’re a bit like a Pez dispenser – letting you fill them with sweets, so you can encourage kids to put their real Wii remotes in their mouths. Hurrah for Nintendo!
Wavy-handed Mario controller
Completely impractical, and later levels will be totally impossible, but playing Super Mario Bros with a theremin is… different. Kind of reminds me of playing Bubble Bobble on the Master System using a pair of pliers.
PS3 Controller: Even Worse Than PS2
IGN have been allowed to have a play with what is essentially the final PS3 hardware. Despite being mostly positive about the console, one bit sticks out – the controller. Although much the same as the PS2 Dual Shock 2 pad, only without the “shock” as Sony wouldn’t stump up money to appease the rumble technology patent holder, the “SIXAXIS” pad holds some other more nasty shocks. Firstly, it’s cheap and plasticky, but more important than that are the new …
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (Switch): COMPLETED!
Fun fact: Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow on the DS was my first Metroidvania type Castlevania game. Yes, I played the Holy GBA Trilogy a couple of years after this, and it’s 19 years since I first played Dawn of Sorrow. I’d not even had this diary going for that long at the time. Somehow, I still remembered a lot of the game. Most of the bosses, how to reach certain areas, and certainly the plot were all there in my …
Twilight Survivors (Switch): COMPLETED!
As you can guess from the name of the game, and how most games in this genre contain the word “survivors”, yes, Twilight Survivors is indeed a Vampire Survivors style game. By this, I mean you are swamped by hordes of enemies in wave after wave, collecting experience point pickups to level up, and each time you do you can choose from a random selection of new weapons or weapon improvements. Hopefully this randomness is favourable enough to kit you …
Shin-chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation – The Endless Seven-Day Journey (Switch): COMPLETED!
Kaz Ayabe is known for making, well, the same summer holiday game over and over again. He has a series of titles called Boku no Natsu-yasumi (which means “my summer holiday”) which are quiet little games set in rural Japanese villages where you collect bugs and catch fish and run errands and, well, that’s it. You discover secrets and there are events and stuff but they’re like Animal Crossing on whatever the opposite of steroids are. On the 3DS, Ayabe …
Animal Well (PS5): COMPLETED!
What if Jet Set Willy was a Metroidvania and it was a still all pixels but all the pixels had thousands of colours and there was amazing light and shadow effects and you got special toys that gave you new skills and it was all creepy and weird and there were ghosts and rooms in total darkness and there were puzzles and switches and you could warp around the map by climbing into the mouths of animals? Animal Well. Well, …
Gal Guardians: Demon Purge (Switch): COMPLETED!
Why yes, this is another Metroidvania style game! And yes, it’s another one based on a different game, this time Gal*Gun by Inti Creates. Inti Creates, who have made some of my favourite platformers (including some other Metroidvanias) like Azure Striker Gunvolt and Blaster Master Zero. Of course I’m going to buy it. The ‘hing with Demon Purge, which differentiates it from all the other “explore a castle” games is that you control two characters at once, each with different …
Nour (PS5): COMPLETED!
What even is this? I’ve completed it and I’m still not sure. I think it fits into the same sort of category as something like Electroplankton or Noby Noby Boy where although there is a goal of sorts, it’s the toy you play with along the way that’s the real game. In Nour, you’re given a large restaurant table, and each plate on it takes you to a different scenario. In each, the controller buttons spawn different food and drink …
Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition (Switch): COMPLETED!
I’m definitely in the mood for roleplaying games this year, so Xenoblade Chronicles – a game I already have, unplayed, for the 3DS – came to mind. Of course, I couldn’t play the 3DS version when a newer, better, more complete version exists, so I had to buy that. Naturally, it has never seen much of a price drop but after a few weeks of checking sites for cheap copies an Italian version came up on eBay for £23, less …
