Things I’ve been playing recently
Roundup time! Need For Speed: Most Wanted U (Wii U) At less than £15, I couldn’t resist this. The best version of essentially the sequel to one of the best driving games ever (Burnout Paradise)? Sold! And, I’ve not been disappointed. Sure, it’s more realistic with the real cars and less arcadey handling, and yeah, the billboards and barriers you have to smash through aren’t all bright red and yellow, and OK, so there are police cars out to spoil …
Skylanders (360): COMPLETED!
Look! Look at that thing in the post title! And the tag list! LOOOOOK!! It says “completed”!! That’s right. About 18 months after starting the game, my daughter and I finally completed it today. We’d been just a couple of levels off the end for months and months, but every time we got a new Skylander we played some earlier levels to level it up a bit and get money to buy upgrades. Today, we went for one final push and …
Pikmin 3 (Wii U)
And go back for the remaining fruit I did. None of it was that hard to reach, but I did seem to be missing one fruit in the Distant Tundra area. Nothing was showing on the map, but I figured out it was a bunch of grapes I’d somehow not picked up (even though I recall doing so), so headed for where they were. Only to find a single grape was there. Just one. How I missed one, I don’t …
Pikmin 3 (Wii U): COMPLETED!
15 hours, apparently. Which equated to 39 in-game days. That’s how long it took me to find the Cosmic Drive key, best the final boss, and escape from Certainly Not Earth and head home with all the fruit juice and seeds I could carry. Well, most of the fruit juice and seeds. 43 of the 66 fruits available, in fact. And rather a lot of carrotmen died for the cause. Er, about 700, all in. Which sounds horrific, but you …
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (3DS): COMPLETED!
I am not a big fan of the Donkey Kong Country series of games. I didn’t like the SNES ones, I didn’t like the Game Boy ones, and although Donkey Kong 64 started well, the collecting killed it for me. As a result, I didn’t even have a slight interest in the Wii game “Donkey Kong Country Returns”, of which this is a 3D “remix”. So why then did I play it? Firstly, curiosity. Secondly, it was free. And thirdly? …
Thomas Was Alone (PS3): COMPLETED!
Here’s something unusual – a PS3 game. A completed PS3 game at that. Haven’t had that in months! Thomas Was Alone was something I did want to play. I thought about getting it on Steam, but then I remembered – I don’t play PC games – so waited until a console release. Sadly, it only hit the PS3 (and Vita, I think), rather than any console I actually use, so I left it. Until I realised I had just over …
New Super Luigi U (Wii U): COMPLETED!
Well, that was easier than I expected. I thought some of the later levels would be hard as nails, but due to being pretty short, they weren’t. Even Bowser wasn’t too difficult, despite the lack of restart points (meaning if you die on the boss, you have to restart the level completely!), taking only two attempts. Disappointingly, he was the same boss as with Mario, although his attack pattern was slightly different. With him defeated, I set about completing some …
Some things I’ve played recently
Round up time! Doritos Crash Course 2 (360) I turned my 360 on for the first time in months this weekend, and my download queue kicked in. The first thing that downloaded was this. It is, considering how it’s both a shameless advert for Doritos and free, really good fun. Much like the first game, really. I was enjoying it, until I ran out of the stars you need to buy the next level. You see, you collect and win …
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (3DS)
So hard. So very, very hard. Any game that causes me to lose over 40 lives in a single level is hard. To have several levels where I lose 40+ lives, is just ridiculous. That said, I’m sticking with it. Even though I did one level today (one in the Cliffs where you get barrel’d into the background and have to quickly run right and reach a platform before the floor disappears) and nearly snapped my 3DS in frustration. Needless …
Toki Tori 2 (Wii U): COMPLETED!
Aw! Lookit all the pweety birdies! I saved them all! After getting stuck on just about every puzzle in the game, but managing to solve them all just before Miiverse stepped in to help, I finally reached the final special frog and “captured” it, sending it to the room with the giant evil heart, and the game was won! Now, I expect there’s something to be gained by collecting all the little symbol things strewn across the map, dumping them …
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
“Make it so!” So I did. Well, I sat there and pretended to, at least. That’s me in the Pikmin 3 themed house that showed up over Spotpass this week in the Happy Home Academy Showcase. I ordered some nice things from it too. Aside from that diversion, I sold all my turnips and made about 4 million bells. I gave over a million away, because I’m nice like that. Invested in another 6000 turnips for this week, even though …
Toki Tori 2 (Wii U)
This image shows just one of $hlmun places where I got stuck. So stuck I thought I’d have to give up. So I posted on Miiverse, and before I got a reply, I figured it out myself. Exactly like I did with every other puzzle where I got stuck. I’ve just realised this is the first time I’ve mentioned this game here. Not really surprising, as I bought it as soon as it came out, and hated it. It was …
Earthbound (Wii U)
I’ve never played Earthbound before. That’s not really surprising, as it never came out in the UK, and I wasn’t that much of a SNES gamer anyway – certainly not to the point of wanting to import US games. I didn’t really know that much about the game either, apart from that it was an RPG, set in roughly the modern day, in a relatively “normal” setting, and was absurd. And had Ness from Super Smash Bros in it. Or …
Super Mario World (Wii U): COMPLETED!
Look at all the little eggies! Look at them! I rescued them all! Woooo! Oh yeah, and the princess. It was certainly harder than I remember, and I’ve only done the main route through the game with very few secret levels – 53 exits in total. The final boss, and the level leading up to him, was far, far easier though. Odd. Now, I realise that to many this is evil heathenry, but I have to say – SMW is …
