Outrun Online Arcade (360)

It’s Outrun 2006 Coast 2 Coast! Only not quite! For 800 points on Xbox Live Arcade! What is ace: It’s FUN. Like the older versions. It’s also SHINY. What is not ace: There’s less there in the previous games. It has Arcade mode and Heat Attack mode, but no mission mode or anything. What is a real killer: online mode, the main point of the game, is broken. It’s all too easy to get the BSOD – where the track …

Sega Classics Collection (PS2)

This was just £10 in HMV today, and as I looked at the back and realised that Tant-R seemed to be, in fact, the western version of 2DO Arukotowa Sandoahru – something I didn’t know existed – so I bought it. Went through most of the games giving each a quick play. They’re a real mixed bag, with some (such as Tant-R and Virtua Racing) being little more than ports of the originals, whereas Golden Axe is a full 3D …

The 3DS is Here

Actually, it arrived yesterday. It’s very shiny. And very, very impressive. I’m amazed at the difference a bit of 3D makes to games – those on other consoles suddenly look very flat and “wrong”. Even just the subtly 3D menus, splash screens, and “screen furniture” make the games more alive. No doubt over the next few days I’ll post more of my thoughts, but here’s a brainjumble purge to be getting on with: The console Surprisingly small. It’s supposed to …

Misc PSP Demos (Demo) (PSP)

With my new-found ability to download game demos to my PSP, I put a load on to play today. Space Invaders ExtremeExcellent! It’s exactly what the title suggests – Space Invaders, only Extreme! It’s a lot like the DS Space Invaders game from a couple of years ago, but with more power-ups and a combo system. And bonus levels. Apparently there’s a DS version of this PSP title too, which is supposedly even better. LocoRocoSeveral demos, in fact. I really …

Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground (Demo) (360)

Oh my! First skate. and now this! Amazing! Firstly, let me just say one thing: TONY HAWK AND SKATE ARE NOT THE SAME TYPE OF GAME. It really annoys me when people say that TH games are redundant now that skate. is here, and it does everything TH games should have done long ago. This is not true. Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground is, like all TH games, an arcade game. skate. is a simulation. Like how Gran Turismo isn’t Outrun …

Assorted 360 Demos (360)

I played through a bit pile of these today, so thought I’d bung them all into one post. Blacksite:Urgh. I don’t really like FPS games. I also don’t like squad-based shooters, and marines-vs-aliens shooters are, in my opinion, dull. So imagine my joy when I realised that Blacksite is a shad-based FPS with marines shooting aliens. I could barely contain my excitement. Colin McRae’s Dirt:Where I come from, “dirt” is a synonym for “poo”, so this game is basically called …

Ridge Racer 6 (360)

It’s cheapy-cheap at Play, which is where I got it, but then realised I could have saved 15p by buying from Play-Asia. Bah. Make not the same mistake! I didn’t really know what to expect. All of the other Ridge Racers have left me cold, and the DS version is one of the worst games ever created, but this, is actually pretty good. In fact, it’s not far off Outrun 2 good. Well, it may perhaps be 75% of the …

Ghost Recon: Island Thunder

Even though I hate soldier games, and squad based soldier games most of all, I still bought this for a fiver a couple of weeks ago. Had my first play today, on co-op over Xbox Live, with the openly homosexual “madm0nkey”, whom I have previously thrashed on such titles as Project Gotham 2 and Outrun 2. However, since we were playing co-op, and I had no idea at all what to do, what the controls were (they’re not in the …

Ridge Racer DS

Just a quick go, and I finished the third track on the first “set” in first place. If you see what I mean. I unlocked “Car Attack” mode then, which I played, and won a car. The Pink Mappy one, in fact. It’s, er, great. I also noticed, while racing to win it, that you can do outrageous powerslides like those in Outrun 2. Which means Ridge Racer DS is now exactly 237% better than I’d thought previously. Hurrah, eh?

Stray (PS5): COMPLETED!

The first game to be “free” with the new higher tiers of PlayStation Plus on the day of release, Stray was a lovely surprise. I knew it existed, so I don’t mean like that, and it was announced to be coming to the service a while back. No, what I’m referring to is the gameplay, the setting, and just how good it is. Until downloading it, my interested was “ooh, a cat game? That might be fun”. But it’s so …

Tanglewood (Evercade): COMPLETED!

There was a lot of hype surrounding this game before and soon after it’s original release on the Mega Drive. Not least because it was a home made but professional quality Mega Drive game coming out some 20-odd years after making a Mega Drive game had been a financially viable prospect. It looks amazing, and has some fantastic animation (especially on the fox you control), and I saved a load of money getting it for the Evercade instead of other …

Yooka-Laylee (Switch): COMPLETED!

Yooka-Laylee, or Yooka hyphen hyphen Laylee if we are to take the logo as canon, is – in case you’re not aware – the most Banjo-Kazooie game since Banjo-Kazooie. This is, of course, completely intentional and the entire point of the game’s Kickstarter campaign. It’s also the reason I (eventually) bought it. Many people have slated Yooka-Laylee for a number of reasons. It’s a relic of a past age of collect-em-up 3D platformers. It’s rather too close to the source …

Yakuza 0 (PS4): COMPLETED!

There’s a hell of a lot of content in Yakuza 0. So many side missions, attractions, events and time wasting opportunities. Most of these are introduced as the story plays out, such as the slot car racing, the arcades and the underground female wrestling. Or Kiryu’s real estate empire building or Majima’s Cabaret Club improvements. Or what about blackjack or pachinko? Karaoke? Shogi? So many different things to do. I barely touched any of them. Sure, I played a bit …
