Things I’ve been playing recently

Earthbound (Wii U) Progressing well through this now. Well, at least I was until I entered Moonside where everythings is… wrong. The map is like Fourside only upside down, and all in neon. And there are invisible walls. And some people you talk to warp you all over the place but not to anywhere useful. And “yes” and “no” are reversed, except when saving your game. It’s very odd. Oh yeah, and Paula got kidnapped by a green squidalienghost in …

Earthbound (Wii U)

I’ve never played Earthbound before. That’s not really surprising, as it never came out in the UK, and I wasn’t that much of a SNES gamer anyway – certainly not to the point of wanting to import US games. I didn’t really know that much about the game either, apart from that it was an RPG, set in roughly the modern day, in a relatively “normal” setting, and was absurd. And had Ness from Super Smash Bros in it. Or …

The First Wii U Post

My Wii U arrived! So I spent most of the weekend playing it and the games I got with it. Nintendo Land It’s not a minigame collection. No matter who tells you it is, it isn’t. It’s a collection, sure, but some of the games are full, proper games. Take the Pikmin Adventure game. It’s Pikmin. Sure, it’s not got all the item collecting and night-time save-all-the-pikmin bits, but it’s a complete and reasonably long “campaign”. Single player only game …

Games I’ve Been Playing Recently

Yes! It’s another lazy game-play-roundup-post! You know you love them! Oh, and before I get into that, a little bit of housekeeping: I’ve added my Raptr feed to the sidebar. Exciting! Skyrim (360) Somehow I got sidetracked from what I presume is the last quest in the Thieves Guild plotline (it’s easy to do – I talk to everyone and most people give me quests, so I’ve over 60 open now)  and ended up finding some more dwarven ruins en-route …

2011: The Games

It’s a little later in the year than usual, but, as is traditional, here’s my list of the best games of 2011. Also as previously noted, this is a list of the best five games I played in 2011, not necessarily those that came out then. As is becoming more common, I’m buying games well after release when they’re cheap. 5. escapeVektor (Wii) Criminally overlooked, this WiiWare gem is a fantastic Painter-type arcade game. I played it from start to finish …

Haunted

I suggested to this fella here that his One a Day post yesterday should be about things that scared him as a child, and his resultant ghost story reminded me of this one from my childhood, which I thought I’d share. Grey Lady. There’s always a Grey Lady. Friend of mine lived in a huge, but run down, manor house in the middle of nowhere, and often over the summer I’d hang out there, messing about in the boat on …

The 2010 Gaming Expenditure Horror

I’ve been tracking which games I play, on my Gaming Diary, for 6 years now. It’s helped me realise how many different games I play, and how many I complete. This year, however, I’ve additionally started tracking the games I buy, and how much I paid for them – the aim being to scare myself into how much I spend on gaming. Thing is, just knowing that it’s logged has actually made me more frugal with my spending. Not only …

Dead Space: Extraction (Wii)

I hated the Dead Space demo on the 360. Mainly because I found the controls impossible and the game far too hard. However, on the recommendation of virtually everyone in existence following me playing Ghost Squad and House of the Dead: Swearathon, I decided to pick up the Wii prequel. And I’m glad I did, because it’s more than a bit ace. I’ve only done the first two levels so far, but each was a good 45 minutes or so …

In defence of the Wii

Nintendo’s Wii gets a bit of a hard time on gaming forums and newsgroups. In the eyes of many, it’s still a console for kids and/or old people. If you enjoy playing Wii games, the 360 and PS3 owners sneer at you as if you can’t afford a “proper” console (even though the 360 is cheaper!). They wonder how you can possibly like playing games with “last gen graphics” and “tacked on waggle”. What they’re not realising, is that graphics …

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360)

Played for quite some time today. Spent a while wandering round, and went to Bruma and bought some new spells. Also bought some new armour, and then enchanted it. I have 85% shield at all times now, as well as a 20HP health bonus! Aces. That was enough time to get Traven talking again, and he asked me to go to Bruma to check up on the guild there as he’d not heard from them in a few days. I …

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360)

Another extensive play session today, as shown by my game save’s time of over 64 hours. Again, I did far too much to go into everything, but I managed to gain three ranks in the Mage’s Guild (I’m now a Conjurer), and another rank in the Thieves’ Guild. The Thieves’ Guild task was pretty simple, involving taking a secret passage from Bravil Castle to a tower, to obtain a special arrowhead for the Grey Fox. The passage was partly flooded …

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360)

Since I was in Bravil (I wish I could stop reading that as Breville – I keep thinking about sandwich toasters) anyway, I thought I might as well explore. And sell everything in the Mage’s Guild shop back to the shopkeeper, as it let me take them and do so. That made me a tidy sum! I’ve opened up several new quests too – I have to find a Mage Staff, owned by the woman in the guild shop and …
